I wish the press would stop using this awful "happy slap" term
Are we just degenerating when vermin like this are roaming the streets? Are we just powerless to stop it? please someone reassure me are we doomed as a society? Are the kids so totally devoid of any feelings, compassion, respect?

To a certain extent I do hold with the saying 'give me a boy until he is 7 and I'll show you the man'. I think something has to be targeted at the up n coming generations to try and 'stamp' this out for want of a better phrase. The kids that do this sort of thing have no fear, their not scared of authority, parents, the law, police - nada. We need to find a way to scare them again.
i read that today! how terrible....I agree with you Loosehead, the media and govt. should not use this "happy slapping" term - it makes criminal behaviour sound like a cool trend! And what do kids like to follow - cool trends!
I'm appalled at how little respect the police and judicial system is requiring juveniles to have for authority. Kids will always try to get away with extreme behaviour, but we should not allow them to! Instead of getting a warning or "slap" on the wrist or a paper with ASBO written on it, they should be punished or "reformed" in some way. Maybe Tony Blair should enlist the services of Supper Nanny? It worked for Ruth Kelly and Jamie Oliver.
