TBF I don't know how anyone would imagine that England would stump up for pensions if Scotland chose to leave the UK.

what is a wee ?
When’s their next referendum?
Piper it what the Scots would call a child or in Sturgeons case ‘ a little one’
You would have thought this issue would have come up before the vote in 2014, the one where the referendum question was "Should Scotland be an independent country?" ...
Have had a quick look at the article. While I understand that Scotland will have to foot the bill for pensions should they gain independence I do wonder about all the money they have paid into the communal pot over the years. Will this just be written off?
Maggie, ttt is not interested in what any devolved country have contributed . That’s why best to ignore him.

maggie, 2 words, "Barnet Formula" - you'll be skint love!
Ah right TTT, I get it. That's why Scotland can afford to privatise Scotrail, have free prescriptions, university study, bus passes for under 22s and over 60s. Skint??
Who pays the State Pension to those with entitlement to State Pension living outwith the UK?
Question Author
maggie, you can do all that because England give you more dosh per head than we give ourselves. Try and learn things instead of just being a nationalist without a rudder.
"maggie, you can do all that because England give you more dosh per head than we give ourselves."

Odd, I thought the money was dished out by the UK government from funding including that raised in the whole of the UK and not only from England and the English?
There is no communal pot - state pensions are paid out of taxation. We (the UK) already have a big problem as our population is aging, so fewer young people's taxation is required to support more old people who are living longer.

The SNP is presumably hoping to turn Scotland into a kind of Norway, with a sovereign wealth fund created out of a huge sack of cash that the "Rump UK" would chuck its way for leaving, that it could then pay pensions out of. But nobody knows how big that sack of cash would actually be, it seems, and I can see the UK playing hard-ball considering the circumstances that the negotiations would be taking place in: the Scots having voted out and all of us still facing the looming pension crisis ...

ellipsis: "The SNP is presumably hoping to turn Scotland into a kind of Norway, with a sovereign wealth fund created out of a huge sack of cash that the "Rump UK" would chuck its way for leaving" - err dunno where they get that idea, they will however get a proportional share of the national debt.
TTT, please stop dishing out veiled insults. You really know very little about Scotland - or me for that matter.
Question Author
I have not dished out any insults veiled or otherwise, just reporting the facts. Sorry if they mess with your agenda.
You expect Scotland to pay its share of the National Debt but don't expect the Rest of the UK to pay current pensioners living in Scotland?
What's wrong with this arrangement:

Before independence (i.e. now): all pensioners in the UK are paid out of ongoing UK taxation.
After independence: remaining UK pensioners are paid out of ongoing remaining UK taxation, Scottish pensioners are paid out of ongoing Scottish taxation
Pensioners living outwith the UK continue to receive their UK State Pensions so I cannot see there being any difference for an independent Scotland.
// That's why Scotland can afford to privatise Scotrail //

um, that's not what they're doing - rather the opposite.
