Like so many people, I have been watching events unfolding for many months and hoping against hope that Western powers could unite enough to give Putin pause and that he would settle for a diplomatic victory and plenty of concessions - not that that would have been a good outcome either because he would come back for more and eventually he would reclaim (that's how he sees it) Ukraine. It would have bought time, however, and hopefully have opened a few eyes.
Now, I am expecting an invasion imminently. I had thought that he might wait until the Olympics finished, but it is possible that the debacle over the Russian ice-skater has tipped something in his mind.
The only small and personal positive I can come up with is that my granddaughter has just started A-level studies and is doing History, specifically Russia from 1890-ish. Well before Christmas we told her to keep an eye on current affairs. I'd rather she just learnt from books though. :(
