OMG the terror these people must have felt. Could anyone possibly survive this?

I have just (unfortunately) seen a video and the plane does do a vertical nosedive, straight down. Those poor souls on board.

// Could anyone possibly survive this?//

nope
The plane was nearing its destination so would be much lower than 30,000ft which is cruising height.

// Flight tracking sites report the plane was in the air for just over an hour, and was nearing its destination when it went down in Wuzhou.
According to FlightRadar24 data, the last sourced information on the flight showed it ended at 14:22 local time, at an altitude of 3,225 ft. //

That's ok then, 27,000 feet less to panic!
The Daily Mail isn't the best place for accurate reporting.

Let's wait and see what the BBC report.

Eeek.
The Boeing 737 Max is still grounded worldwide. The plane that has crashed was not a Max, but the previous model. It has a very good safety record (as does the airline), and over 7000 have been built.
"The Boeing 737 Max is still grounded worldwide."
no so back in service TUI using them from our local airport
Terrifying!
There still seems to be some doubt as to the safety of the Max variant.

From late last year:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-59420570
The Mail reports the plane, "is believed to be a Boeing 737-89P, not a MAX"
I have just (unfortunately) seen a video and the plane does do a vertical nosedive, straight down.

It's not a Max. And to cause such a fall it must have been a catastrophic failure. So could easily be Pilot(suicide), explosion on a vital part e.g tail) or a mechanical/electronic failure.

Anything really at this point.
they will almost certainly find the black boxes and the cause will be determined
rudder hard-over, maybe?

Apologies for the duff information. The 737 - Max returned to service 15 months ago.
This was a 737 - 800NG.

Pilot suicides/mass murder are very rare. A malfunction or pilot error is more likely. Just have to wait for the preliminary report.
All things like this are rare thankfully.

It would have to be some pilot error to do a vertical dive. But like you say lets wait and see.
Mushroom, that rudder problem was on much earlier models in the 90's.
It was sorted, and won't be the cause of this
How terrifying for the passengers and crew. And sadness for their family's. RIP
I'm not sure if this will work, I trust Petter much more than I trust the Daily Mail
