.....she was on her way home from a school Christmas party, bless her.

If the driver was aware that they'd knocked over a little girl (or anyone else for that matter), then drove on, how can they live with themselves.

I was in tears just watching the news - so how must a person feel when they've actually killed someone?

I suppose the driver did something wrong. i.e careless or dangerous driving or was over the limit through drink/drugs.

Would a 10 year stretch make the scumbag feel any better? Probably not, so he (or maybe she?) is simply avoiding detection.

may they rot in hell.

My sentiments entirely WM.

I can't stop thinking about her happy little face at the Christmas party with all her friends.

They will be aware. There will be damage to the car, be it a busted light etc.

So when the person sees the news and hears what happened, I hope that they realise that just because they got home a bit quicker that night, a family in the neighbourhood are distraught.

The family must be going through hell, esp at this time of year. Thoughts and prayers go out to them.

I hope they catch the driver, but in this harsh reality the punishment will be minor.

Oh god, I just read the story on the bbc site. They were on the fricking pavement!!!! They abandoned the car there, and 2 men fled the scene.

This is when you hope that their friends etc realise whats happened, and call the police. Its not "grassing up" - these 2 morons have committed murder, and should be made an example of.

What a terrible tragedy for all the family. Not only was the little girl killed instantly, her Mother is still in intensive care.

They were all so happy & on their way home from a Christmas play (not a party as the news read last night) in which her Father took part.

Apparantly one man's been arrested, but if he's found guilty, he'll probably get off with a slapped wrist!

The tragedy of this story second to the childs death of course is that in this country this is not considered to be a serious crime, if they catch this scumbag he will get 6 years for manslaughter and serve 3 years with parole.

Our children aren't considered much are they?
...because the world's a horrible place...
There was an interesting case here in the States years ago...a teen (I think he was 18 or 19 at the time) was drunk, and driving home from a party, when he struck and killed another teen. He was found guilty of drunk driving, and ordered to pay a large restitution to the victim's family. What the family requested (and the judge granted) was that the driver pay by sending them a check in the amount of $1 per week, every week, until the fine was paid off. This way, they said, he'd be reminded at least once per week that he'd killed someone.
What I find most annoying about all this is that even if it comes to court, some scumbag lawyer who knows they are guilty as hell will be doing his/her best to get them off anyway.
One report said that a person got out of the car, stood there with the little girl's body under the car, and told her father it was nothing to do with him, before running off.

Morning all - Yes you're right Grunty, I also found that amazing - the culprit's right under the Police' nose & he still runs off!

Now that sounds like a good way of pricking a drunk driver's conscience Ouisch - if indeed such a person has one of course!

The thing is, if and when they catch these swine they will imprisoned for a few years and then let out again. If sometime takes a life and it is provenbeyond all doubt that they have done so then they should be locked up for the rest of their life. The law is an ass sometimes..they put people in prison for non payment of council tax and let murderers out to roam free and murder again.

Couldn't agree more shaney!
A deeply tragic and devastating thing to happen to anyone. My heart goes out to the poor family. It sickens me that human beings can be so selfish and cowardly, as to run off when they should be doing all they could to help.
Thank God, we are not all as despicable as those creatures. They will be caught, but what punishment can bring back her young life.

My sentiments too David.

I do feel that I must point out that "some scumbag lawyer doing their best to get them off" is not the case.

In English law, representation by a criminal lawyer is a basic right of any defendant in any case. They are obliged to defend a defendant even if their defence is ridiuculous.

In Eastenders recently Sam's solicitor stated "I'm a criminal lawyer Peggy, not a miracle worker".

Many criminal lawyers know that they are unlikely to overturn a conviction even before the case starts.

What is this country coming to? Children being starved, maimed, raped and murdered. I keep thinking of the little boy, happily going shopping with his mummy, suddenly two bigger boys drag him away, and stone him to death. What must his last thoughts been? He must have been terrorised poor little mite. Like someone mentioned before, the do gooders have a lot to answer for. I for one would very gladly pull the lever, but they wouldnt suffer. Whats it going to be like in the next ten years???
