Coming in. Very interesting. Macron 28.1% of the vote with Le Pen polling 23.3%. But ... next round sees the voters for Le Pen, Melechon(EU sceptic) 20.1%, Zemmour(far right) 7.2%, and Pecresse(centre right) all get to vote again. They do not want Macron and are 78.5% of todays vote. Not looking good for the "preferred" candidate next round then. Look at the map in the link supplied. ( if the %s have changed it is because it is a rolling figure as results are counted.

It’s a pretty good result for Macron.

It was also a strong showing by Melenchon. It seems a likely he’ll do what he did last time and urge his supports to abstain, do the “white vote” or vote for Macron.
Four candidates with admittedly small shares of the vote have already given Macron their support.
Macron cannot be complacent but if he concentrates on the election and avoids pointless wooing of “Poutine” then he should win
I'm so pleased that my bit of France is not right-wing. Our friends and neighbours over there are lovely decent people.

""I'm so pleased that my bit of France is not right-wing. ""
Are you saying that they are left wing ... like Russia or China?
Togo; I am simply saying that they are decent people, just like us.
The left are out of the picture.
The right are fragmented, splitting their vote.
Macron the centrist will will again, going against the tradition of the ferench not electing a President for a second term. (Chirac over 20 years ago).
Yes I’ve heard people talk about the “tradition” of the Fifth Republic not re-electing presidents.
In fact it’s more of a recent trend: in the first 50 years on the republic only Giscard failed to be re-elected (Pompidou died in office - as did de Gaulle of course during his second term)
I must admit to being a bit vague about how the French Elections work.
The first round, which we have just had, eliminates the no hopers.
Is the second round a two horse race or are there 4 or 5 (or more candidates?)
Whatever, Macron is going to win according to the polls and predictions.
There are two candidates : to ensure one gets at least half the votes (tho it could only ever be at least half of the votes cast)
The BBC called it a “weird” system but several other countries use it, including Ukraine (where 39 candidates stood in round one!), and it’s a lot better then the bizarre US system.
What’s happened in French politics is indeed that Macron has hoovered up most of the centre-ish politicians of the other main parties left and right, neutering them.
That’s not healthy in a country like France which tends to be quite polarised politically as it leaves no serious mainstream opposition. And a danger that that recent trend of going against the incumbent will lead to an extremist winning.
//Togo; I am simply saying that they are decent people, just like us.//

What an arrogant person you are. Hardly 'decent'.
Atheist, //Togo; I am simply saying that they are decent people, just like us. //

Who are 'they' - and why are 'they' more decent than anyone else?

Can you imagine living amongst "decent people just like us". The simpering sanctimony and peevish piety would be overwhelming.
So the Queen isn't decent?
Have a re-read of some of the babbling dross above then go and think what you're doing with your lives.

Talk about manufactured outrage.
et vous?
Moi? Je suis comme le cucumber.
// Are you saying that they are left wing ... like Russia or China?// oh thank god for that - I thought this was a serious thread about french eletions - phew !

They are down to two
Macron and LePen
this is a re-run of 2015
will she win - has become a lot more centrist ( no more gas chambers, hanging rapists and so on - not much to tempt some ABers then)
dougie
good morning
agree
this thread is a classic bait and change....
As I said at 21:32 "Our friends and neighbours over there are lovely decent people."
You may think I'm smug or whatever, but I'm simply saying what I think of those people.
No you didnt you wrote:
//I'm so pleased that my bit of France is not right-wing. Our friends and neighbours over there are lovely decent people.//

So implying anyone right wing is not decent.

Talk about spin.
