I am always intrigued by the notion of current politicians 'apologising' for past history.

To whom exactly are they apologising, since the people involved, both offenders and victims, are long dead?

So apart from looking virtuous and right-on - what's supposed to be the point of this?

I can't see the point of it myself. Nothing to do with me or anyone else living. When on a school exchange in Germany in the 1960s the German teenagers all seemed apologetic about the war - I couldn't understand why and I still can't - they weren't born then.
Is it some sort of virtue-signalling these days? Rather naff, if so.
I think they've missed one.
It's her cunning plan to continue to spellbind the faithful with her special magic touch.

Also a distraction from the ferries debacle, Prestwick Spaceport, the other space fantasy on the north coast, £600,000 evaporating poonds, how to fix Scotrail now it's back in public hands, when the A9 dualling will resume and on and on...
I can't think of anything serious to say about this pointless move.

But I can see the potential for a few jokes.

^^^^ More to the point, I used to see German families taking their children around Oradour-sur-Glane and explaining the horrors and their country's part in it. That is how to exculpate past actions.
It's a form of reaffirmation of current beliefs, and yes it does smack of virtue signalling.
my grandmother was a right witch - can I claim compensation?
Here in East Anglia, Matthew Hopkins is still seen as a modernist ;-)
Bit silly IMO, like trying to wipe out all references to the slave trade, war atrocities etc. It's history and we should learn from it.
Agree...and the same with the DT story about woke and Manet.

Simply if the Courtauld doesn't like it, then they should sell the painting.
