I am a football fan, season ticket holder, go to the odd away game. Once had a (plastic) bottle thrown at me, missed, otherwise the only time I have felt scared at games was due to the police, closing off the only exit, trying to channel large numbers of fans into narrow space, etc. Most of the comments I have seen (from journalists) say the policing and stewarding was woeful.

In future this situation is going to be exacerbated by the use of paperless entry tickets in the form of a QR code downloaded to a phone.

Those selling fraudulent tickets need only convince someone that they are buying a genuine electronic ticket – the fans will only discover the fraud when they try to gain access to the stadium using the faked ticket, leading to inevitable queues as they are turned away at the turnstile.

And also people with genuine (home printed) tickets that the turnstile scanner can't read.

While an investigation will be needed to uncover the cause of the problems, there does seem to be a possibility that faulty technology might have played a major part in the problem, with undoubtedly genuine tickets (such as those given to players by UEFA) being flagged up as fake by the security system.
