Aaaaaargh! :-)
The ü looks like a smiley face.

I think you can still call it Turkey if you're spending money there.
Many countries are called by their native tongue but still have the English equivalent.
They want the name to be “Türkiye” in English and not "Turkey".
Is it pronounced the same?
There is an old sketch of Jan leeming trying to say Hong Kong in cantonese with the right tones ( hang gong)

Churchill has something to say on this
"I suppose we will hve to change from Angora" he mused

Istanbul - or constantinople - was so called because the signs in Anatolia said - eis thv poliv - - (ice teen polin to you)
towards the city
and they all thought it was the name ( like Kangaroo)
oops and eis thn polin is nothin in Turkish - um of turkiya
turkce I mean
teshkur ederim ( arabic acutally)
Kanga is aboriginal for 'what is the name of this animal?'
TILLY, this gives the pronunciation

I don't deserve BA for that Ikky, but cheers! :-)
Thank you, Corby.
Lots of countries (& cities) names in their own language are different from the English equivalent. They can call themselves whatever they like & we can call them what we like, innit.

It was made for you NJ :-)
not sure of that, PP, someone checked out all of the indigenous languages and couldn't find one in which kangaroo meant "I don't know", so it may be a suburban myth.

There is also a NZ village called Nonoti, allegedly after one of the first settlers suggested to another one that he might like to choose a name for it.
Finland, of course, will henceforth be known as SUOMI
Albania is Shqiperia.

The world seemed to fall in line when Burma changed its name to Myanmar. They didn't when Cambodia changed to Kampuchea, and it eventually reverted to Cambodia. I'm not sure why we went along with one and not the other.
Erdogan by any other name is still a prize sh%T
yeah OK

Word History: A widely held belief has it that the word kangaroo comes from an Australian Aboriginal word meaning "I don't know." This is in fact untrue. The word was first recorded in 1770 by Captain James Cook, when he landed to make repairs along the northeast coast of Australia.

I admit I was taken in
BUIT someone is gonna quip: yeah we knew that bu the way you are always taken in by the awful crap onAB !

ter daah - ay thenk yew
oh is it time for some Latin?

quid nomen ( asked, vel rogavit Gregorius magnus)
sunt Angliae ( ze leedol slaves are English, your holiness)
non angliae sed angeli ( They are not Angles but angels)
quid nomen regis eorum?
appellunt regem Alle - ( They call ze keeng "Alle")
non dicunt alle sed clamant " Alleluia"

and I am afraid that sealed augustine's fate
Augustine for it was he: reached paree and visiting the Stade for a quaffette and gossip learnt how frightful they were.
And Augustine went back and asked the Pope - are you sure
Yeah popey was - the rest is history
