No doubt they’ll get a soft warning and be free to carry on, this is a protest for milking cows , what is supposed to happen if cows aren’t milked? surely they’d die ?

Cows only have to be milked because they go through a very regular cycle of being pregnant and having their calf/calves taken from them so that the farmer can milk them.
If there were no dairy industry there would be no cows on farm but of course left to their own devices the cow would feed the calf until weaning and the milk supply would naturally dry up.

No, I don't agree with them, I drink milk, eat cheese and yoghurt and believe it is a very valuable foodstuff. I also eat meat.
I did, however, promote the eating of veal to make the bull calves' lives worthwhile, as they were slaughtered very soon after birth and simply disposed off. This practice is now dying out in the UK because semen can be sexed.
Dairy cows wouldn't die if they weren't milked; they would be extremely uncomfortable and maybe in pain, liable to mastitis but their milk would dry up as with humans.

Gromit, calves are no longer slaughtered for veal. The majority of bull calves used to be slaughtered long before they reached the age to be killed for veal (veal became very unpopular), usually within a few hours of birth but now very few bull calves are born to dairy cows because the semen is sexed.
Veal calves are slaughtered between 6 and 8 months of age and having been crated for many years.

Barry,
In 2015 95,000 young calfs were shot after endorsements for veal from celebrity chefs. That resurgence has seen a 175% increase in the number of British calves slaughtered for veal in 2018 compared with 2008, according to Defra data. By 2019, 121,400 calves were reared for predominantly rose veal.
The bulls that do survive the veal cull are now used for beef, but are slaughtered at a much younger age because they are not as profitable as the milk producing females.

I eat dairy products (I don’t eat beef).
If possible I want the animals that provide me with food to be well cared for, not cruelly treated, and not distressed. I am not going to insist on that, but I glad there are people who campaign for compassion in farming.
// We’ve drank milk, ate cheese and butter from time immemorial and these woke idiots want that stopped //
The modern diary farm is highly industrialised and processes a lot more animals than our grandparents did. During that industrialisation, the welfare of the animals has deteriorate. A lot of animal right activists don’t want to stop diary farming, they just want it to be kinder to the animals.

Yes, they want more compassionate treatment of farm animals and personally I can see nothing wrong with this. Just because we eat them, drink their milk (which is for their calves) etc.etc. doesn't mean they should be treated like automatons with no feelings. I often read in the press about the of cruelty meted out to farm animals, which is why I support Compassion in World Farming, and it breaks my heart. Why people have to be so damn cruel is totally beyond me. Compassion is in short supply amongst so many humans when it comes to sentient animals.

When my grandparents were born there were fewer than 2bn people to feed. Now there are almost 8bn. Global population has trebled in my lifetime. That's why food production (and everything else) has been forced to become highly industrialised. I'd have more time for these idiots if they were protesting against over-population.

Gromit, the laws have changed over the last couple of years and the dairy industry has improved considerably since 2015.
I see no difference really in eating veal from a calf slaughtered at 6 to 8 months than beef from a bullock slaughtered at 12 to 22 months for beef.
Bull calves born to dairy cows generally don’t make good beef, hence the slaughtering shortly after birth or raising them for veal. As I said earlier, semen selection has greatly reduced the number of bull calves born to dairy cows.
