20,000 female veggies and vegans are 33 percent more prone to broken hips.

1. Are you surprised?
2. Wonder if this holds for men as well - conceptually, I can't see why not?
3. In being PC and wokeish, I presume it holds for transgender MtF....tongue in cheek.

in the DT page 3 but given they have blockers to non-subscrips, here's another source, essentially the sme article:

An explanation of the research by the authors of the study, they felt there was a gap in research regarding certain types of fractures in women. https://theconversation.com/vegetarian-women-have-33-greater-risk-of-hip-fracture-here-are-three-things-you-can-do-to-reduce-your-risk-187898

Women are more prone to osteoporosis than men, vegan and carnivores and every diet in between
Question Author
yes, I agree, barry but interviewing/researching 20k women - how much did this cost to state the bleeding obvious.
Well at least it would be less than if they surveyed men. :-)
Question Author
true, Douglas.....
If you're not surprised at the outcome, with its being "bloody obvious", how did you arrive at the 33% figure?
Question Author
TC - wasn't me who arrived at the 33 percent figure - read the article. My 'obvious' was a generic statement but not my guess of what the actual number would be...
I'm a veggie (for health reasons). I'll let you know if my fragile, hollow bones crack under the strain.
Question Author
Do - mozz. It will be interesting to measure if the AB population matches the national average!
I know where the figure comes from but its your saying it was the, "bleeding obvious" claim I am questioning.

As you had no idea what the percentage increase in risk would be, the 33% increase was not, "bleeding obvious"

Before this bun fight gets started properly can I just check that said buns are gluten free and ingredients ethically sourced?
//20,000 female veggies and vegans are 33 percent more prone to broken hips//

Maybe 20,000 female meat eaters(stop laughing at the back) are 33% more prone to sausage lips. :))
Wowzers DTC you have just gone down in my estimation!
Question Author
the research wasn't put together or sponsored by me. The premise was what I thought was an obvious one and underpinned by barry's comment. I guess the positive is that the gurus have quantified it...but I do wonder what the equiv. sample of men would generate - and one does have to question the cost of such research in these budget-restrained times.

Grass munchers etc is just me stirring the AB cauldron to incite some reaction and responses....

Togo - nearly a BA
Douglas - hardly anything beats a scottish soft bap and up there with a Cornish milk one
RH - I was probably already way, way down in your book so surprise and disappointed that I had come up in your estimation.
It would be more useful if they'd looked at other things too.

E.g the rates of cancer or heart disease within the same sample as well as bone health. That way you could make a make a more informed judgement about whether being a veggie for health reasons made sense or not.
Question Author
good point, tomus.
Most beef eaters drink milk, eat cheese and other dairy products. Vegans and some vegetarians don't. Dairy is an excellent source of calcium which protects bone density, hence the broken bones.
Clued up vegans know they need to boost their calcium intake and eat the right foods to compensate. Junk food vegans don't

That's very odd. They are concentrating on protein but it is lack of calcium that leads to bone fractures
We are omnivores. Eat weird diets at your own risk.
