Attending a Catholic school in a not well off area we had to bring sixpence in each Monday to be collected by the nuns. Father's money it was called, to be given to the priests.
For some, especially those with a good few children, this was a lot of money but Mums would beg and borrow to give each child the sixpence so sparing the wrath of the nuns when a child didn't have sixpence to give to the priest.
