The Dutch city of Haarlem will be the first in the world to do so. Apparently farmers are also being told to reduce animal numbers, many will go out of business.

if they switched to wheat and cooking oil it would make up for shortfalls from Ukraine
Very sad for farmers..

I suppose that might be a possibility for some farmers, depending on the logistics of such a change.
Are there other specific crops they could change to?

I suspect if similar was suggested here, both farmers and the public would be protesting.
As it is, I'm surprised this would happen in the Netherlands as I thought they have a fairly meat heavy diet.
The Netherlands has extraordinarily little farmland in relation to what they produce. Their farming methods are, by default intensive, and it's a good thing this is now being regulated.

I spent this weekend in London with a friend who is vegetarian and was totally meat free at each meal. I didn't miss it, and I am a big meat eater normally. Its wasn't rabbit food either, we went to a Turkish restaurant the first night and an Indian the next with delicious food. I think everyone would benefit from reducing their meat intake even just one main meal a week.
A lot of land used for livestock is not suitable for crops, particularly in the UK.

Yes, I know that ymf. Raising cattle and sheep makes the best use of what would otherwise be wasted land.
Meaghan...I've no problem with that...as long as vegans in particular get all necessary nutrients.
I do have problems with a government possibly telling farmers what they should grow...or people what they *should* eat. Advice is good, but we all need to decide what works for us as individuals.
Rearranging Dutch agriculture by doing the Haarlem shuffle?

Shake. shake, shake, shake a tail feather baby.
I think you may be mixing 70s disco with late 50s jive there, Doooogie. Not a happy ensemble.
Just ride, ride, ride little pony ride.

There have been constant mass protests in Holland and throughout the EU, by farmers and the public, over these ideologically driven diktats.
It seems, not content with engineering power/heating shortages, the EU fat cats are determined to create food shortages as well.
I'm told there's very little/zero coverage of these protests on the UK news. I wonder why?
Moronic. People will just buy imported meat. And no government should tell people what to eat, what to wear or what to think.
Business opportunity ? After all, they won't want to import antibiotic rich US meat.
I'm a pescatarian and I honestly couldn't give a stuff what other people eat. I was a carnivore for 50 years, I'm certainly in no position to preach to others about their dietary habits. I know how good a bacon butty is.
