Because they are the Americans. To Quote TGM: " The Americans will always do the right thing, ...once they have exhausted all other possibilities!"
As far as I'm concerned as long as some US states have the death penalty it'll be a black mark against an otherwise great country.
That and the gun laws or lack of.
Well, the prisoner *has* been given the choice. Not a very informed choice, but choice nonetheless. I think I'd rather be "stabbed with a needle" than axphyxiated with a mask.
Damn savages - yes, shooting or hanging seems preferable. A plastic bag tied over the head would be cheaper.
The US frequently execute by shooting, the police just don't bother with a trial.
Perhaps they could be hung, drawn-out and quartered Dougie!
It's part of the attempt to make it humane - to appease the liberals.
If they must execute people, why don’t they use the drugs that euthanising clinics like Dignitas do. Or is that not barbaric enough?

Totally the opposite from me.

There is always one. One that you can bet wouldn't do the job.
Clover, lethal injection is the most used form of execution in the US. This prisoner can't stand needles so has opted for nitrogen hypoxia thinking it will be like laughing gas

They did, but drug companies pressured by the liberals wouldn't allow the drugs to be used.
Cloverjo, they're not trying to be barbaric, I think just the opposite. Methods like gas and electricity were seen as modern and efficient, whereas hanging belonged in the medieval past with burning and beheading. Hanging was what lynch parties did. (In France, the guillotine was similarly seen as more efficient than headsmen having to resort to a series of chops.)

Strange how it so often doesn't seem to work out that way, though, with prisoners taking ages to die.
yes it's all the liberals fault isn't it... lol

they use methods like this because they like it. It scratches an itch... like the old public executions and torturings of medieval times did
// why don’t they use the drugs that euthanising clinics like Dignitas do. Or is that not barbaric enough?//

coz you have to get doctors to do it - and they wont

The MTs ( Medical Techs - red necks 'trained up' to do it,) screw up the veins and the clients thrash around

A lot have no veins thro er previous drugs

Barbiturate drug firms have stopped producing barbiturates - a few years ago a facility tried to buy stuff from an Brit Hospital who latterly said no
Perhaps they could be hung, drawn-out and quartered Dougie!

surely long drawn out and quartered
or ....
//the prisoner can't stand needles... //

Why is that even on the agenda? A few minutes after the injection and the needle won't be a worry to them.
i suppose it's a bit like last meals... irrelevant if they go hungry or have something they don't like the night before but it's all part of the grim spectacle
I don't think the condemned person's preferences should or need to be a consideration. (Except what they want for their last meal)
Michael Portillo did a Horizon documentary called "How To Kill A Human Being".

Hypoxia is produced when pilots undergo testing during high acceleration or in low pressure when not wearing an oxygen mask, both of which he experienced.

A pig was tested on a mixture of argon and nitrogen (which produces hypoxia) whilst eating apples in a small enclosed area.

The pig staggered back and collapsed. When it recovered, it went back to eating the apples in the enclosure, demonstrating it did not associate any negative affects with the apples.
