Seeing Putin on the news this evening he seems to be realizing what a massive mess he's made. Also seems to be scratting round for support that's not there.

I think Xi is losing sympathy and patience. I could be wrong.
As far as I know he's surrounded by oligarchs and gangsters who wouldn't be out of place in the Mafia. If he had the misfortune to fall from a high window or off a yacht his replacement would probably be of a similar ilk.

Sandy,I am beginning to wonder if he still does have such people round him.

LadyCg. China don't like to mix with anyone who fails.
it is axiomatic that if left alone for support and trapped, a rat will attack. Dicey situation.
PS Weird though it sounds, I was once trapped with a wild rat and 2 idiotic 13-yr-old lads in a corner of glazed corridors - the rat attacked the lad who tried to catch him! That's schools for you!

The rat as attacked many times and failed.I see it that there is little left to attack and to many round him to make a break for it
When dictators/crime family bosses start to look weak is when they fail and get replaced.

Hopefully that is what is now happening.
he's got nukes, may loose his mind and go full on.
Rats are intelligent animals, they do what they do to survive.

Putin is of lesser intelligence, his greed and quest for power have hurt not only the Ukrainians but his own people too.
The confrontation with Prime minister Modi probably shook him.
The contrast between the Putin of Feb 24 and Sep 16 could not be more stark.
He is completely out of touch. He ordered the taking of Donbas by September 15 since when he’s actually gone backwards there. Losing Izyum and Kupiansk to the north more or less kiboshes his plans to make meaningful progress in N Donetsk region.
Today, possibly coordinated attacks in Kherson and Luhansk cities blew up several local officials including the prosecutor general of the so-called Luhansk peoples republic.
Meanwhile as Russia demonstrably weakens unrest grows among its neighbours as they doubtless sense this: Georgian forces reportedly move towards S Ossetia, Azerbaijan is attacking Armenia, Tajikistan is threatening Kirghizistan prompting the latter to threaten martial law and full mobilisation by tomorrow.
Kazakhstan is leaving the Russia dominated security alliance known as the CSTO.
Wars can have unpredictable consequences in unexpected places.
Putin will be over by Christmas.
Not wake up one morning. His replacement will be more interested in lifting the sanctions and boosting profits, than trying to rebuild the Russian Empire.
thanks Itch
spot on as ever

The chechen leader - hairy, red haired and eats babies for breakfast - as saying he was gonna have a word with Putin. Chechen mercenaries reputed to be the most brutal

I THOUGHT - Putin was saying he wanted Peace - and the deal would be to keep what they got
and so he cd say - - he had liberated Don Bass as he said

I think the occupied Ukrainians were too permissive first time round and now they have learnt what Russian liberation means !
Rats are intelligent animals, they do what they do to survive.
oh a bit like the Tory party then
ter daah !
I know about things that have happened in occupied territory which are too shocking even to mention here.
There’s a lamppost and a rope awaiting Kadyrov …
There’s a town in NE Donetsk called Bakhmut which the Russians have been attempting to capture literally for months. I’ve lost count of the number of unsuccessful attempts they’ve made. It is an utterly futile exercise particularly now that they’ve lost their supply lines to the north. No one knows how many men they must have lost trying.
And the manpower shortage now has them recruiting prisoners to fight increasingly well trained Ukrainian opponents. When people raised eyebrows at this Wagner’s Prigozhin, Putin’s “chef” and now chef de combat it would seem, pointed out to Russia’s middle class; it’s either that out sending your own children. Touché. It wouldn’t just be the Buryats, the Bashkirs, Chechens and Chuvash. But middle Russia.
Meanwhile Russia assaults Ukraine’s infrastructure with missile attacks.
It sums up their war really. As they continue to retreat militarily these attacks will probably intensify. It’s thought they tried to use one of their new hypersonic missiles to attack Kriviy Rih. It nosedived.
Ironically therefore what Ukraine mostly needs now is the best air defence to stop this
sandy: " If he had the misfortune to fall from a high window or off a yacht his replacement would probably be of a similar ilk. " - yes but I also think they'd see it as a way out, they could blame it all on Putin, end the war and then slowly rejoin the human race.
fender: "he's got nukes, may loose his mind and go full on. " - yes but the people that would actually have to fire them could probably not want to commit suicide.
When Putin dies we should all get a bank holiday!
It isn't just Putin of course
It isn't the case that Putin staged a coup and suddenly a nice, civilised country became evil.
Putin was helicoptered in by senior FSB elements to promote their coup and was initially a reluctant politician. His business had been KGB dirty tricks in E Germany and mafia dealings in St Petersburg.
It's fair to say he warmed to the job tho :-)
The bottom line is tho Russia is rapidly losing the ability to wage any sort of conventional war in Ukraine or indeed anywhere else (hence the unrest I mentioned earlier) and the longer this goes on the weaker he will become as this was almost certainly his war in the sense that he probably pushed for it and has by all accounts assumed direct military command.
If he felt his position was under threat he would not have left Moscow for Samarkand.
On the other hand he appears to feel a lot of things that are not true...
^ Hopefully ..
