One way to cope when you are losing a war I suppose: just tell everyone you have won, and expect them to believe it.

Didn't you see the results ;-)
Seriously, I could imagine that in the actual cities of Luhansk and Donetsk, which have had 8 years of brainwashing and where there have always been some people who hanker after Russia, then probably some.
The rest of those regions: negligible I'd say, especially now.
Kherson and Zaporizhzhya: less than negligible.
It seems as though they intend to "annexe" the entirely of the four regions, despite the fact that they control none of them entirely, even Luhansk, barely half of Donetsk, about 60% of Zaporizhzhya, but not the city of Zaporizhzhya itself. So they are going to declare a part of Russia a city that they don't even control.
Utterly bonkers
Added to which, they also still occupy small parts of Kharkiv and Mikolaiv regions (for now)
It looks as though they are deploying draftees - up to 20,000 - to Belarus, possibly to open some sort of diversionary new front to the north.
More insanity.

That is nonsense spicey.
However it is true that during the early part of the conflict when the war raged in 2014 and 15, there were people on the wrong side of the Ukrainian shells. But this was a conflict years in the making and the planninf and it was provoked needlessly by russia.
They are making a whole load ot trouble for themselves doing this:; there was a reason they never annexed Donets and Luhansk at the time. It means now there is no path of retreat for Putin. No voluntary one, that is

I don't think Putin is crazy.
But I am not seeing the nuances, somehow :-0
Where people go wrong is in imagining that Putin "owned" the process that led to him coming to power. He did not: he was brought in by more powerful people as an apparatchik who could front their takeover. He by all accounts was a reluctant leader.
The implications of that are that although in the intervening years he has "warmed to the job" he's a product of more sinister forces and when he goes it's unlikely to be in favour of anyone "nice"

This might interest people.(who haven't heard it)
Discussing who they'll choose for Ukrainian President after they engineered the coup. When the US Ambassador to Ukraine mentions who the EU want. Victoria Nuland, US State Department gets angry,
'F*** the EU, we get to decide' (or similar)
Of course, like everything inconvenient, they claimed it was Russian disinformation. However, she later apologised to the EU.
The only people who deserved one, Ukrainians.

The problem Putin has now is: how do you square claims of “victory” with mass mobilisation?
And Lyman in Donetsk is days from going back to Ukraine.
Zelensky has called an emergency meeting of the National Security and Defence Council for tomorrow. When “Fundamental decisions for Ukraine” will be made

This morning the Russian army shelled a convoy of civilians escaping from occupied Zaporizhzhya. 23 killed including a 4-year old girl.
Rather poignant in view of this:

Good article by Owen Mathews (he lives in Russia)in today's Spectator. It's behind a paywall I think so I'll paste an extract in;
'...In Russia, every crisis is also a business opportunity. Within a day of Putin’s mobilisation call, reports a businesswoman friend, a network of consultants specialising in bronirovanie – literally, to ‘armour-plate’ something – had sprung up. Because vaguely defined ‘specialists’ are exempt from the draft, managers scramble to furnish employees with papers proving they are indispensable. Average cost: £120 per person, most of which gets kicked back to the draft offices issuing the exemptions. A widely accepted tariff for crossing the border without draft papers has also emerged: £300, in cash to border guards.
Pranksters posing as draft officers call Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov’s son, ordering him to report for a medical exam. ‘Obviously not!’ 32-year-old Nikolay Peskov replied. ‘You must understand it is not right for me to be there. I have to resolve this on a different level.’ Key word: ‘Obviously.’ The idea that the children of Russia’s elite would serve their country is, to them, a self-evident absurdity....'
