'King Charles will bear the same cross as her late majesty'. Way OTT and rather unpleasant.

Pardon?

I think it's over the top. Bearing a cross, as a phrase, belongs to Christ and shouldn't be employed for party political purposes.
But it’s a turn of phrase that is used on a daily basis. I wouldn’t imagine most people what think about Christ when they are saying it

Switch it on. It's gut-wrenching.

If that’s all she said it’s a common enough expression - and in his case it’s true. What’s the problem?
Now I think calling someone a cretin is way OTT and unpleasant. But there we are.

Naomi: You're wrong. It's not a common expression. I simply thought it was an ill-judged remark. If you use it on a daily basis then I would think that unusual.
What cross will he bear? I don't get it.
Of course it’s a common expression. ‘We all have our cross to bear’ - don’t we?
Maybe it's not a common expression to you...but everyone else here seems both familiar with it, and not uncomfortable with it.
Tigger, it means he has to bear the weight of kingship and all the responsibility that goes with it.
I've heard it many times but I don't understand what context its in and why it would it be deemed as OTT and unpleasant.
Paigntonian is a Christian and he’s taken offence because the phrase stems from Jesus’s struggle in bearing the heavy wooden cross he was crucified on through the streets of Jerusalem. I think in this occasion it’s a phrase the OP will just have to accept is in common usage.
I get that bit, Naomi, but I'm wondering why it's being made into a big deal.
Because the OP has decided to take umbrage. Nothing more. It’s a non-story.

That was in response to 16.41
The OP seems to think cross bearing can only be done by Jesus.
Of course, many who were punished at that time also bore crosses. Maybe it's the connection with wrong doing that's being frowned upon here.
Oh I see!
Everyone types much quicker than me!
