Crimea was seized by force of arms. Little force was required. But force it was.
The brain says that this turning into a total Russian defeat. And so it should. This is not some sort of territorial dispute that calls for a settlement. It’s a nakedly aggressive, brutal and unprovoked land grab by one country against another. Therefore “negotiated solutions” are only appropriate if there’s a stalemate and both sides want to talk. Those conditions do not prevail currently.
Today is a cataclysmic day for Russia’s army. It has lost 44 tanks in a single day. The US lost 23 in the entirety of the Iraq war over 10 years.

I'd imagine if, say China, had a military pact with Canada and were going to move an army right up to the US border, there'd be a slightly different narrative.

i have given up trying to guess at putin’s objectives lol…. before this invasion he had all but succeeded at grabbing swathes of ukranian territory and even after 2014 NATO looked to be directionless… this war has been a godsend for NATO and the west which is unified in a way it has not been for decades… russia is burning through human and material resources and can’t possibly sustain this war without being propped up by china… frankly if you’re the US state department the whole thing is a dream come true… he has also permanently damaged relations between two countries that have very deep commonalities…

In fact we know exactly what he was thinking,because RIA Novosti helpfully, is probably accidentally, published an article two says after the invasion which began thus:
"A new world is being born before our eyes. Russia's military operation in Ukraine has ushered in a new era - and in three dimensions at once. And of course, in the fourth, internal Russian. Here begins a new period both in ideology and in the very model of our socio-economic system - but this is worth talking about separately a little later.
Russia is restoring its unity - the tragedy of 1991, this terrible catastrophe in our history, its unnatural dislocation, has been overcome. Yes, at a great cost, yes, through the tragic events of a virtual civil war, because now brothers, separated by belonging to the Russian and Ukrainian armies, are still shooting at each other, but there will be no more Ukraine as anti-Russia.
Vladimir Putin took upon himself - without a drop of exaggeration - historical responsibility, deciding not to leave the solution of the Ukrainian question to future generations. After all, the need to solve it would always remain the main problem for Russia - for two key reasons.
