Supreme court judges rule unanimously that the holding of a referendum is a reserved matter and thus permission is needed from the UK government.

You're at it again, Corby, and your constant stirring isn't helpful. Unlike the contributor who just joined us again and, once again, is no more, TTT is not a troll.

the idea that westminster could just ignore it if scotland ran its own illegal referendum just doesn't seem realistic to me... yes legally they would not be compelled to do anything but politics and law are very different things...

if scotland does run its own illegal independence referendum and gets a comfy majority (which i think it would) then scottish separatists will treat it as a mandate and be in permanent conflict with westminster...

if the uk govt is unwilling to grant a second legal referendum then i fear this will get very ugly down the line... the very fact that the supreme court made this ruling will boost the independence movement.

untitled:The Catalans tried that in Spain and ended up in the nick.
The no camp would ignore the vote making it a farce, even the most vociferous blue woader couldn't claim that 90% + really wanted "independence".
Question Author
Personally I think the yes camp make the most noise but I don't think they'd win.
Question Author
10:35 I mean in a proper legal referendum.
Lets just hold a UK referendum and get shot of them once and for all.
"The Catalans tried that in Spain and ended up in the nick. "

i can't imagine the uk government sending in the boot boys to crush it like the spaniards did... can you?

"Lets just hold a UK referendum and get shot of them once and for all."

we'd probably lose northern ireland as well...

part of me wonders now of it's actually worth holding an English referendum on seceding from the union... i have always argued for the uk but seeing as the union is obviously doomed anyway it doesn't seem worth trying so why not just get ahead of it and have it over with!!
Question Author
The union is not "doomed anyway" - just because the extremists have taken over Scotland it does not mean they are the majority.
Question Author
All this uppityness is caused by devolution, total disaster. We should reverse it ASAP. Get rid of all these "parliaments" and go back to how it was before Blair and co burgered it all up.
@10.46."as seeing that the union is doomed anyway"....errr,in what way is it doomed?Healthier than ever,in my view.

untitled: "i can't imagine the uk government sending in the boot boys to crush it like the spaniards did... can you? " - probably not but they could, sedition is a crime.
One thing that will stop an illegal move to independence is the fact that the UK Government spends around £15 billion extra in Scotland as a whole, per year, than it collects from Scotland via taxes.
^Another contendor for best answer.

yes ZM, well of course that is no 1 on the famous unanswered 10

Indeed, Tora. Another example of MS Sturgeon living in cloud cuckoo land.
TORATORATORA, regarding your so-called, "famous" ten questions, they at not that famous that I can mind on what they are and I cannot be bothered to look for them.

However, the Scottish Government has prepared three documents which may contain the answers you are seeking.

"Independence in the Modern World: Wealthier, Happier, Fairer: Why Not Scotland?"

shorturl.at/izBQR

"Renewing Democracy through Independence"

shorturl.at/coVW7

"Building a New Scotland - A stronger economy with independence"

shorturl.at/dQRU0
I can tell you now, TCL, non of those links will tell you how they propose to balance the books (even if they worked).
The links do work, you just need to copy and paste them.
This document:
https://www.gov.scot/publications/building-new-scotland-stronger-economy-independence-summary/#:~:text=This%20would%20be%20funded%20from,the%20full%20powers%20of%20independence.

States that 'The Scottish Government proposes setting up a dedicated Building a New Scotland Fund to invest up to £20 billion over the first decade of an independent Scotland. This would be funded from oil and gas revenues and other windfall income, and where necessary from borrowing'

It conveniently ignores that Scotland would immediately need around £16b extra income as soon as Westminster funding is withdrawn.
Question Author
11:43, it also does not take account that a new nation would have a very low credit rating so borrowing would be very expensive.
I like the 'other windfall income' comment. Leaves from the magic money tree, no doubt.
