Just read the report in The Mail, Canary. It has left me with more questions than answers. Cannot believe the police are not able to confirm or deny shared usage of the pavement. Did the pedestrian make physical contact with the cyclist? Did the cyclist leave the pavement in fear of being assaulted? The cyclist was not wearing a helmet.

Overall, tbph, I am surprised by the verdict and punishment.

Yes choux, it is an unusual case, and while the prosecution does present a salutary lesson for all, the "punishment" does seem a tad severe.
I am sorry for all involved, including the driver of the car that collided with the prone cyclist.
Police turn a blind eye to cyclists illegally riding their bikes on pavements nowadays because thee are no cops on the beat any more. Pavements are becoming more and more dangerous because of cyclists often speeding along with no care at all for pedestrians. I feel this lady was right to complain, but not to push the cyclist. I feel sad for all concerned, but I don't feel this disabled lady should have been jailed.
Especially so, when we keep seeing lenient and woeful sentences being doled out to many :(
fd, with so much cctv everywhere it seems ridiculous to not pursue miscreants.
According to the article the cyclist wasn't pushed, just gestured at, so sentence seems a bit over-the-top to me.
I asked a policeman once why cyclists on pavements are ignored now and he said they just don't have the manpower any more now there are no longer police on the beat.
Madness, she didn't touch him and he should not have been on the pavement anyway. This now gives carte blanche to cyclists to ride illegally. Should have been given medal is you ask me. I always shout "get on the kin road" at them can I now be done for manslaughter if one of the morons rides in front of a bus? makes my blood boil.
This woman gets 3 years for not touching a cyclist who fell off their bike. This Guy gets half that for killing a pedestrian in an actual collision whilst riding a bike with no front brakes.

....law's gone crazy.
I can imagine how this woman felt with her blindness, cognitive problems and disability on seeing a bike rushing towards her, I can understand her gesturing at her and telling her to get off the pavement.
Maybe apply rugby rules, she had no business being there and had to take the consequences.

Whatever, time for a review of the judiciary at all levels.

One element of the sentence seems to be that the judge thought Ms Grey was lying in court and had shown no remorse.
Controversial to say the least!!

The pavement has become a more hazardous place than say 30 years ago. Mobility/disabled traffic, electric scooters and bicycles are now a common sight on our pedestrian highways!

The woman cyclist was 77 years old and fell off due to the gesticulations of the 49 year old woman. It's unlikely the 77 year old was going around at breakneck speed and probably due to her age frightened to go on the road?? Is it in the public interest to lock up the 49 year old woman, probably not!!

\ judge thought Ms Grey was lying in court and had shown no remorse\

Only an appeal can undo the judge's discretion!
I found this sentence stunning, I cannot fathom any argument to explain it, especially in comparison with far lesser sentences handed out for deliberate crimes.
I wonder if the cyclist would have got 3 years in prison had it been the other way round.
As she is reported at merely gesturing as she rightfully complained of a cyclist using the pavement then, based on that, she has done nothing wrong, and the court verdict is inexplicable. Maybe we aren't being informed of the correct version of events that the court was privy to. Pedestrians are not responsible for cyclists who choose to put their life in peril by cycling and then fail to avoid an accident.
Kuiper, when you are partially sighted as this lady is, moving objects can appear to suddenly loom in front of you and it can be difficult to judge distance and speed. Probably the gesturing was an automatic response.
I am finding it more and more difficult to reconcile the sentence with the pedestrian's behaviour. If only there was cctv evidence to show the victim's manner of cycling that day before the collision.
Does the pedestrian speed up her walk prior to gesticulating at the cyclist?
