//A siren-like alert will be sent to mobile phone users across the UK next month to test a new government public warning system.//

//Phone users will have to acknowledge the alert before they can use other features on their devices.//

//A message will appear on the home screens of people's devices during the test, with vibration and a loud warning sound that will ring for about 10 seconds, even if the phone is set to silent.//

//People can opt out by searching their device settings for emergency alerts and then turning off severe and extreme ones. Officials say the alerts could be life-saving, though, advising against switching them off.//

Anyone turning the alerts off, I am.

Alerts? Hmm ... maybe... but that I can't use my phone unless I acknowledge them ... I think not. That's intrusive and that I do not like.

I`m not hugely bothered about the alerts. I`ve been in California and Japan when there have been alert test sirens on the TV (presumably for earthquakes but could be adapted for anything I suppose) I guess notifying by mobile phone is just a more modern way of doing it.
I hope there won't be 6 per week like the 'this is a reminder to book your free COVID quackcine' bloody annoying.
//I suppose it's because they think people also have to the right to have the sh it scared out of them. they love it.//

Well they did that for the best part of two years when the pandemic was ongoing. It was a deliberate part of their strategy to do so:

“Perceived threat: A substantial number of people still do not feel sufficiently personally threatened; it could be that they are reassured by the low death rate in their demographic group…The perceived level of personal threat needs to be increased among those who are complacent, using hard-hitting emotional messaging."

I suppose they are missing that now and are looking for some other method with which to control a recalcitrant population.
It's under 'emergency broadcasts' on my phone
I presently have a Samsung Galaxy S9.
Yay ! Not WiFi only ;-D
Emergency Alerts on my phone but it's too old to receive the ones in the OP
I get the phone to search for "emergency" it finds nothing
Thanks 237sj. Hidden in location. I wonder why. Shows the Samsung have a damned poor search function then.
With hotels all over the country full of fighting aged men, it won’t be long before there is a terrorist attack or multiple lone wolf attacks(already started).
This alert system will be ringing non-stop!
Why turn off?? It could really save your life. And as for intrusion, are you really that worried after all those apps you've got on your phone?
It has a vanishingly small chance of saving my life, but a absolute certain chance of allowing authorities annoy me.
What should you do if it goes off when you're driving.
You can legally use your phone whilst driving in case of emergency; so you can respond to it. The only trouble is that all the other drivers will also be responding, so expect mass accidents.
Advice given here, dustypuss: https://www.gov.uk/alerts

"If you’re driving or riding when you get an alert
- You should not read or otherwise respond to an emergency alert whilst driving or riding a motorcycle.
- If you are driving, you should continue to drive and not respond to the noise or attempt to pick up the mobile phone and deal with the message.
- Find somewhere safe and legal to stop before reading the message. If there is nowhere safe or legal to stop close by, and nobody else is in the vehicle to read the alert, tune into live radio and wait for bulletins until you can find somewhere safe and legal to stop."
Can't they just put the air raid sirens back instead of messing about with people's phones?
^ peoples'^
//^ peoples'^//

No, you were right first time tilly. It's "people's". They are the phones which belong to people, not those which belong to peoples, so the apostrophe goes after "people."
Yes, I know, NJ. :-(
