British troops are being trained to check passports as fears grow over striking border force staff.
But if the soldiers want to directly detain any criminals they will have to call the striking Border force to arrest them. ?????
It's a dilemma isn't it gully. Unlike you the military are also trained to think on their feet. If they detain a criminal they detain them and hand them over to the police who also patrol ports and airports. It's called a citizen's arrest. Use to be under the Criminal Law Act but I am sure PP will soon dive in and lecture us on current procedures.
Reckon they ought to enlist Answer Banks very own Key Stone Cop. Trained up to SAS standard, 100% fit and ferocious. He will sort the crims out , he will attack them with his Stick and zimmer .
A spokesperson says people suspected of crimes ,drug smuggling, people trafficking etc, cannot be stopped by members of the armed forces as long as they hold the correct travel documents. So why bother using troops then ..just open the gates.
This lot seems to me like A smugglers dream , they will be just walking through Custom control and the Squaddies won't give a hoot .
.......Why should they.....
The military are quite clear. All this is a waste of military time and public finances, paying soldiers to do civil service jobs .The country would be better of just giving border control a decent living wage.

You may be too young to remember but during the winter of discontent under a Labour regime we had the military emptying dustbins. We have had the military manning Green Goddesses and Ambulances during the Ambulance strike. Talk about a short memory gulliver.
efficiently too and with good humour, far better than the miserable, overpaid Doom-Death faced Border forces that currently are employed. Salaries for Border Force are typically £24,883 and £41,193 per year plus shift and unsocial hours allowances. Whingers that they are proving to be.
