With only 9% lead mid term it's looking like Sir Beer is unlikely to be the 4th Labour Leader to win a General election in 123 years so who is the likely successor?

I think starmer is likely to stay leader even if he just wins more seats... but if we imagine kier starmer suddenly left or died...

i like angela rayner but i doubt she would win... maybe jess phillips?

if the next labour leadership contest takes place after may 2024 then I think andy burnham would win it easily

If ever a very poor and inaccurate joke had long run its course, it is that one.
Unlike Boris Jonson who was fined for breaking lockdown rules, Starmer wasn’t prosecuted, so the accusation is entirely false.
Only an idiot would think that Starmer will NOT lead Labour into the next General Election.
Between now and the election we will learn the conclusion of the Parliamentary Priviledges Committee investigation into Johnson, and that could be a difficult one for the disgraced ex Prime Minister.

If he loses, he will not necessarily be replaced.
Everyone know a 70+ majority is almost impossible to overturn.
Starmer will not be replaced if:
- he wins back very many of those red wall seats
- there is a hung parliament
- if the Tories have no, or a tiny majority.

In any of those scenarios the progress will be deemed to be good enough and a good/better basis to mount a a credible Opposition.

I reckon most of the red wall (which was most of Johnson’s majority) will revert back. A lots of very tiny majorities in those, and Brexit is done.

Come the next election I think voters who don’t like the Tories will have a bit of a dilemma. They have two alternatives - and neither leader can tell a male from a female. It doesn’t bode well for the big decisions.

Changes at the top unsettle voters, so it only happens if there is absolutely no alternative.

Losing an election usually, but not always, brings a change, and the change will be decided at the time, depending on circumstances.

As naomi points out, the dithering by both leaders trying to decide which does them the least damage - supporting the Woke Brigade, or the Rational Majority.

One is silent, but the other is seriously noisy, and can reach out to the social media generation.
But as Mr Corbyn discovered after he ping-ponged over the Brexit result, the electorate prefer you to take a position, even if you are wrong, rather than wait a fatally long time to see which way the political wind is blowing.

I think she is shrewd and does not suffer fools… she is very hard working and has grit… i think she wants to make the country a better place and i agree with many of her policy positions at least the ones i am familiar with.

i don’t like cults of personality or admiring any politician too much but yes i like her and would be pleased if she became leader. doubt it will happen though.

Opinions differ, but I think she’s, at best, a functional PA to the Sales Manager of a provincial plumbing supplies company.
