Powell was an avowed racist. You can be fluent in Urdu as a white person and still have racist views.
He was a brilliant man intellectually and a great orator and at least he was upfront about his racism as you’d expect someone with a clear and keen mind to be.
Every time his inflammatory speech is dredged up it generates racist and inflammatory reactions as many if the comments here prove.
But the great thing is: he was wrong, because, despite all those pesky darkies everywhere, our rivers are bloodless and show every sign of staying that way

Andy, For a small part of my life Enoch Powell was my Member of Parliament, and he was a good one too. He spoke to the Indian population of Wolverhampton in Urdu. He was voted in as MP for a constituency with a high immigrant population.

Shouting ‘racist’ and ‘bigot’ without providing evidence to support those charges is no argument. It simply smacks of virtue signalling - in effect saying ‘Look at me everyone - I’m not racist’.

I’d hazard a guess that Enoch Powell understood more about the impact that foreign cultures may have on the indigenous population than any of his critics give him credit for - or perhaps that’s something they don’t understand because all they see is colour. He was no fool - and I doubt very much that colour was the impetuous for that now infamous speech.

Ich, you just basically said what I said. Culture not colour. Whether he thought different cultures *couldn’t* co-exist, I doubt very much. I do however, think, he foresaw potential problems - and he’d have been right.

naomi, I believe Powell not only had the amazing vision but the courage to voice it. Racist or race-aware? It is up to the individual to translate what he said and did. I liked him for his forthright thinking and clarity. Oh to have MP's like that now...

What would be fascinating would be to ask Powell now if he thought he’d got it wrong and would he be honest enough to admit it?
There are sadly those who cleave to that speech who still secretly or not so secretly wish he had been.

The ones that I've come to know.
They started of with a shop. That shut down.
Now they have a mosque.
Not a problem.
