Is HMS Defender still out there?

NATO should be doing some sabre rattling at least.
Question Author
I was listening to a discussion on this last night: there are two main schools of thought: on the one hand “it’s an idle threat - they wouldn’t actually do anything”
On the other: they don’t care: and anyway all they have to do is say they’ve laid mines, which would mean having to check. Then they could always either say: “not our mines” or “we warned you”
I personally don’t think Russia would actually attack a ship. The Turkish navy is the most powerful presence ok the area by some way and a lot may depend on how they play it
a present of a couple of missiles at a Russian navy ship if there is any attempt at a Russian take-down of a cargo-ship.
Question Author
HMS Defender is currently some way off the coast of Devon I see.
No naval vessels may enter the Black Sea without the permission of the Turks so it would be unlikely to head there. It’s up to the hosts I think and right now Russia and Turkey aren’t the best of friends for a few reasons to do with Syria and Ukraine.
The fact we need a grain deal in the first place is pretty outrageous since it’s really only a way of living with Russia’s obvious intention to cut off Ukraine from the sea.
And Russia withdrawing from it actually means they can start threatening merchant vessels. And pretty much nothing else.
Shortly after the “deal” expired they launched a massive attack on Ukrainian silos and loading equipment in three Black Sea ports. Destroying an estimated 60,000 tons of grain.
We need to wake up to the fact that Russia is a terrorist gangster state which threatens the entire world by its actions.
Question Author
I agree DTC: however there seems to be a reluctance to engage NATO directly with Russia. This reluctance seems less and less advisable as time goes on.
Another world war could be the answer to your questions Ich.
Question Author
Yeah that’s always the stock reply and like I say it’s an increasingly unconvincing one.
“World war” is a euphemism for “nuclear war” but I don’t see that at all
Unless there's a sycopath involved in the equation
Question Author
Yes I’ve seen this argument raised before: but if Putin was going to try to use his nuclear arsenal he’d have done so by now. He threatened it several times and guess what: nothing happened and he’s stopped doing it.
I’m any case it’s not as if he can just flip like a gunman in a US shopping mall. Nuclear weapons are hard things to launch: it takes a long process and involves a lot of people. More countries on the world with the possibly exception of N Korea have made it as hard as possible to do a first strike. But he should know very well that the west would respond very quickly indeed.
That is deterrent enough.
All they could really do would be start lobbing conventional missiles off at random like the terrorists they are.
But what provokes Russia is weakness, not strength. Like all bullies
//But he should know very well that the west would respond very quickly indeed.
That is deterrent enough.//

Perhaps you should let Mr Corbyn and a fair few other labour MP's know that.

On your OP I dont think any of us are in a position to know what should be done. We simply dont have all the facts.

Although its always tempting to ask for some sabre rattling by NATO we must remember Putin is a cornered rat and likely to flail out unpredictably. Rather than attack Nato or the West he is more likely to just bomb the hell out of Ukrainian women and children.
Question Author
He is already doing that.
That really is the difference between 2014, Feb 2022 and now: Putin and Russia have cast off the mask: there really is nowhere else for them to go. I laugh when I hear people say "Russia might escalate": the fairy is already at the top of the Chriatmas tree.
Nato have been hissing about in the supporting of Ukraine for to long, and thats why its reached this point, and many situations of the past, plus the many deaths. STOP hissing about with this pratt Putin, hes got nothing more than threats left. NATO Stop hiding behind the sofa!!! Putin is laughing at you.
doesn't have to be Nato who launch the missiles at the HIB ss Putin - the Ukrainians can do that - just let Nato ship the land-sea or air-sea missiles out to them.
HIB is an acronym for His Imperial Basstarrd's SS warships
WWIII need not go nuclear. Tactical nukes may be considered by someone trapped into a corner, though.

It seems unlikely that Russia would just capitulate if faced with a NATO entry into the war. And it's not impossible it would call on other nations to help fight off "western aggression". It is easy to assume that would fall on deaf ears, but there are nations who have a vested interest in being allowed the freedom to invade their neighbours. And others with economic and political reasons to stay on Russia's side. So, as NATO is well aware, it would be a risky policy, one with potentially disastrous consequences. IMO they are quite right in hesitating.
Sooner or later, later in this case, you have to face up to a bully and a thug, come what may, because they will NEVER go away, they just get worse the more they get away with it. Ukraine is the worlds supermarket, its an attack on all. Are we really going to sit back and watch millions die of hunger?? You can come up with many excuses not to respond, but it will still not go away until you act. How much longer are we going to sit back and watch even more women and children be murdered, not to mention the deaths of Ukrainian service men and women.

That grain that was burned was destined for China.

Russia would get zero support from anyone of any consequence because everyone knows, despite what they may say, that Russia is the aggressor here and it is holding countries to ransom with the threat of starvation.
This will threaten Britain too as the price of bread increases
My bet is their bluff will be called but we’ll see.
Grain can still go by canal and overland route but not as efficiently
China should be last on the delivery list now, they've done sweet FA since this war started, all but sit back and watch the slaughter.
We can't continue down this path of making the bullets for Ukraine to fire, its not, and won't ever be enough.
Question Author
Ukraine's Defence Ministry says that it may consider all ships travelling to Russian and Ukrainian ports occupied by Russia as potential carriers of military cargoes from midnight on July 21 "with all the associated risks

Excellent: Ukraine at least is it scared if Russia despite being most in the firing line.
And what’s more they have the tools at their disposal
Question Author
“Not scared of”
