On the one hand we have heatwaves....

..on the other we have the collapse of the Gulf stream which will make it much cooler in Western Europe.

The Earth is still warming up from the last ice age. It's natural. It's what it does. The last 20 years? Absolutely nothing in terms of the age of this planet. How is anyone going to stop Chlamydomonas Nivalis, which is present in 50% of the worlds' ice and will eventually melt the lot of it. No-one knows how to stop it. That could be one factor in the cooling of the...

//..will continue to do so unless, and until, people stop sticking their heads in the sand.//

Better tell the Chinese. This country, in the grand scheme of things, is responsible for very little and yet it's costing the inhabitants dearly and will cost them more as time goes on. The hysterical march towards an unachievable goal is futile because the world will not change its ways and nature will do what nature does. Man will have no say in that and it's arrogant in the extreme to think he will. Potty.
// ... the world will not change its ways and nature will do what nature does. Man will have no say in that and it's arrogant in the extreme to think he will. //

The main flaw in this is that it isn't even addressing what I'm saying. I'm not asking us to control natural climate change (although I would point out that our activities disrupt this anyway, eg through large-scale deforestation). I'm asking us only to control *our* influence on the planet, which is considerable.
Did you mean "composting toilet"?
‘ Better tell the Chinese’

The Chinese are way ahead on their renewables.
ClareTG0ld, //I'm not asking us to control natural climate change //

I know - and I didn't say you were.
In that case, firstly I'll take the opportunity to re-emphasise it anyway, and secondly wonder why your reply included "nature will do what nature does" when we both agree I'm not talking about that.

I also want to clarify that my use of "we" is humanity as a whole, not the UK: which obviously can't solve this on its own. That said, I don't accept that moving towards a greener economy is a "dear" cost, to the UK or anyone else, when done right. Properly, it's an investment in local jobs and industries. You can think, for example, of the recent announcements about new factories decided to electric car batteries.
the world will simply have to transfer to sustainable energy at some point… it is a question of “when” and not “if” because our current model is unsustainable and therefore will not be sustained

it is really is a question of doing it early and easy or late and hard. the later we leave it the harder and more painful it will be. but we cannot and will not go on as we are because it is impossible.
ClareTG0ld, I said ‘nature will do what nature does’ because that’s my opinion. I wasn’t addressing you specifically.
Ah, so not a ‘fact’ then, Naomi. You know how you sometimes get confused about facts and your opinions.
No confusion here.
//The Chinese are way ahead on their renewables.//

And they also burn more coal than the rest of the world put together and show little sign of reducing that consumption.
/The Chinese are way ahead on their renewables.//

Or children as we call them.
They may burn more coal but it’s being offset a helluva lot more than most nations.
//They may burn more coal but it’s being offset a helluva lot more than most nations.//

What do you mean by "offset", Zacs?

Is it similar to the way Drax power station in Yorkshire, which burns 7m tons of freshly felled timber annually, is said to be "carbon neutral"?
Just checking my diary.Up here in Aberdeen the last really hot day(25C)was 22 June.Thats five weeks now of cold, cold winds, some nice days,up to 20C,but everyone up here in NE Scotland remarking how we must have had the coldest summer for about thirty years.Global warming?..Awa an bile yer heids....
Probably the coldest summer since 1972-1973?.Was there global warming or climate change back in 1972-1973?
The naysayers who shrug it all off as inevitable forget that we solved the hole in the ozone layer. If the will was there we could do a lot to at least assuage it.

Mind you with the increase in deserts there would be a lot more sand available for them to bury their heads in.
I'm afraid that the UK's approach to "combatting" climate change is akin to burning one's house down to get rid of a wasps' nest. The only difference is that in this case, the wasps' nest will survive the conflagration.
Well i would say this is one of the coldest summers up here in Scotland since 2015(freezing my *its off),*b not t.Where do these people record all this global warming nonsense?I used to holiday in Malta during the Xmas season. The temperature was always 40C plus even on Xmas day.Global warming, climate change.Huh.Nothing new.
