Have you ever heard something so ridiculous, no one alive was a slave and no one alive ever owned a slave, perhaps they should search for those who sold them in the first place and the money we spent freeing every slave and ending slavery.

You sure that's Netflix you've selected, Gromit?

Did you mean 'nobs' gromit?  ;o)

Perlease!

Ludicrous and not worthy of discussion or consideration.

move on, nothing to see here.

Perhaps we should demand money from Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli for the slaves the Barbary pirates took from Europe.

Slavery was conducted on an industrial scale; prior to the end of slavery, in many southern States over 40% of the population were slaves, making slaves one of the country’s most valuable capital assets.

Slaves from Africa arrived in the Americas from the early 1500s (during the country’s colonial period) with slavery lasting until 1865.

Just imagine the wealth created by slaves over a period lasting nearly 400 years.

Why do you want us to imagine that, hymie?  To what purpose?

Since we are now unable to give any of that wealth to the slaves, who created it (who have long since died) maybe their decedents should inherit a benefit in some way.

The British government abolished slavery in its colonies in 1833 and borrowed to compensate slave owners. The British taxpayer had to repay that debt which was not achieved until 2015. As most British people took no part in dealing with slaves but have paid for their freedom do not expect more.

The UK benefitted greatly from the slave trade, with ships sailing to Africa, transporting slaves to the Americas, and returning loaded with cotton/sugar etc.

Some major UK cities would not have their current splendour if it were not for the money earned from slave trading.

Their descendants were fortunate enough not to be born in Africa. Maybe they should be paying the descendants of those who got them out of there to a more fortunate life. There's really far to much drivel about been entitled to recompense when no one alive today is worse off as a result and no other is responsible for the activity anyway. All this utter crepe about "squander wealth that's mine". 'twas never thine. You got a boost and what you made of it was up to you.

@23.47.So how much are you prepared to donate to these reparations,Hymie?I will chip in 20p if that helps. How many thousands of pounds are you willing to donate?

So that's about £600000 per uk family.

Descendants of the slave owners inherited vast sums of money/property, the descendents of slaves (who created the wealth) got nothing.

Slave owners may have made vast sums of money/property through businesses using slaves, but slavery was considered ok at the time and any wealth they made may not even have reached today's descendants so many more generations later. Today's descendents of slaves (who created no more wealth than any other citizen has) got, as I pointed out above, out of a country where they clearly were unlikely to prosper and into one where they could make the most of opportunities for a better life.

No doubt Old_Geezer would be more than happy if he and his family were carted off to some foreign land to be slaves for the remainder of their lives – with the promise that their future descendents, in 100s of years, would have a better life (than they would otherwise enjoy).

Hymie, who rounded them up and sold them to be carted off?  Maybe they should be asking North and West Africa for compensation.

And there is the fundamentla problem, it was Black Africans who rounded up other Africans to sell on, the whites, in the main were too afraid to go and get them.

And as a matter of interest, as many Black people in the UK have done well will they be expected to pay too?

Any reply to my question @03.53,Hymie?The question was"How many thousands of pounds are you willing to donate",to the reparations?
