Not for the first time. I believe a lot of authorisation cards were handed in after the Mark Duggan shooting. Quite rightly so.

I knew four different police officers who shot and killed villains. One officer had been obliged twice to shoot a villain before he was permanently removed from firearms duties.I know for a fact that whilst under investigation the job treated them like Pariahs. They were allowed no contact with other police officers or to collect any belongings from their base. Many authorised firearms considered their position when they heard how their colleagues risked their lives voluntarily only to be treated like criminals by their paymasters before going to trial.You still get the same pay if you choose to be armed or not.

What happened to them at their court cases?

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigated the Sept 2022 incident. Most of the witnesses would have been fellow officers, and presumably there would be body-cam evidence. On conclusion of its investigation they passed on their file to the CPS in March. The CPS decided there was enough evidence to win a presecution.

An unarmed man was killed by a police bullet, so a trial will decide whether it was a tragic error, or recklessness.

Presumably they want immunity. Considering we are now discovering that the Met is stuffed with wrong uns, this could be disastrous. They have to be accountable.

My mate Phil gives a reasoned view on this – plus pointing out that Braverman has interfered with the court case, which could be judged as subverting the course of justice.

But don’t hold your breath expecting her to be held to account for her actions.

Phil also suggests that Baverman might succeed Sunak as leader (once the Tories lose the general election and they ditch him) – heaven help us if she ever becomes Prime Minister.

Armed officers are not robots. They volunteer to carry firearms. I have attended many firearms training exercises and reclassifications in both hand guns and carbines. There is no instructor standing behind you in the real world advising you to shoot or not to shoot. It is the individuals split second decision who,sometimes, pulls the trigger first. We had a Hogan's Alley range at our central Met range and also a cinema range. What more they could do? It is a shoot or be shot decision.
