I don't see a problem with his words

I don't see a problem with his words

A team killed over a thousand Israelis at the weekend.

Yes I see what you mean, Hopkirk.

//I don't see a problem with his words//

They trivialise a bloody and horrific conflict by liking it to a sporting contest.

I think the gaffe was "Israeli team"

I just see it as an informal way of making it clear he is with the Israelis

That's obviously how he saw it too, but he was wrong. Serious situations call for serious language.

Russia, Ukraine, the Middle East on the brink of bringing the unthinkable to the world and one word out of place in this pathetic snowflake culture that we've allowed to be created causes petulant protest.   I sometimes wish I was prone to swearing because that's exactly what I want to do now.   Get a grip!  It's not the end of the world!  It's a word spoken by someone generally acknowledged to be an old duffer - and it makes not one iota of difference to anything.  Sheesh!

What has snoflake culture got to do with talking like a dipstick?

I think that's the problem though Naomi. We don't really want an old duffer that can't find the right words as leader of the free world.

and it makes not one iota of difference to anything.  Sheesh!

only to  the blindfolded....

words can damage: Trump saying to Putin in public - Ukraine they speak russian right so they are russian

led putin to think he cd. invade

Sheesh, isnt that a kebab? When did it enter the English language?

I think the gaffe was "Israeli team"

I did wonder if "team" meant much greater things in America than it does here - |I thought he said it because Hamas isnt a country.

and yes serious things demand serious language - all part of communication and lingistics. I was surprised to hear that Trump would say: " I am a President you mustnt speak to a President like that " - excuse me?

I ALMOST had a senior administrator sit on his desk and strum, " there has been a serious complaint made against you!" ning-a-ning-a-ning.

and I was aghast at the contrast between the actions and the words.

( what happened? oh it turned out he was forwarding the complaint of someone he had a private contractual relation with. He retired)

1968 - I heard it on Rowan and Martin 1967-8

sketch about a white actor pretending or taking off black street talk - sheesh

( sozza got a memory like that, sozza sozza)

naomi is right for heaven's sake. Are we really getting our pants in a twist over this?

"We don't really want an old duffer that can't find the right words as leader of the free world"

It's not that long ago Biden was being praised for his tough speech on Israel.  This "old duffer" has more energy than I have I would be willing to bet. He didn't have to travel halfway round the world - in part on a humanitarian mission for Palestine. People always miss out the bits that they don't want to see.

Tales of sagacity and measured response may be exaggerated.

It is hardly uncommon to refer to opposing groups as teams. One doesn't need to be an old duffer to use the phrase. The strange bit is why anyone, anyone at all, would even think it needed complaining about. It is a sad indictment of the way the world is going.

'The United States and Great Britain are two countries separated by a common language.' George Bernard Shaw (perhaps)
