The police's job is to keep people safe and prevent serious violence. Although I am of the opinion that the march today would have been better not taking place, to my great lack of surprise it appears to have been peaceful, whether you agree with it or not. While some people came intent on confrontation and violence.

This morning was the Lord Mayor's Show and tomorrow is the Remembrance Day Parade.

1800 additional Police Officers have been dafted into London to deal with those and the Pro-Palestinian march this weekend. The last thing they needed were flashpoints created by Y-L and his football hooligans.

The Police and all relevant security forces ought to have been able to carry out their surveillance of the Prop-Palestinian agitators without being distracted by Y-L and his hangers-on.

And for the avoidance of doubt, I think the Met Senior Officers should have stopped the Pro-Palestine march from happening this weekend........or any, come to that.

The police made scores of arrests, many pre-emptive, of people carrying offensive weapons, taking drugs. And there have been cases most recently of thugs approaching protesters near Parliament and snatching their flags. All of this as jack says, distracts from any sort of security effort to keep tabs on troublemakes on the other side.

Paul Merton: The idea that you should have an anti-war march on the same day as Armistice Day is bizarre. Wildly inappropriate.

A lot of the problems around this are because of the perception that early demos appeared to have been hijacked by extremists. So when they announced that they would not be failing to hold another match on Nov 11 of all days it got everyone riled up. Hence the guest appearance by fun-lovin' Tommy and the FLA, the DLFA the who knows what.

It is actually all very sad. There were actually people n the march wearing poppies. No doubt many involved in Remembrance Day celebrations would be sympathetic to the idea of a ceasefire.

I still think the organiers should have held fire, so to speak, today, and  let people concentrate on remembering the dead of this war and others. It matters IMO.
