That is quite true. But it was the Tory government in 1992 who allowed Polytechnic colleges to become Universities and award their own degrees.
I'll address the issue of immigration being require to fund pensions tomorrow as it's getting late. Needless to say I don't agree.
"Most of them seem to prefer the UK to Nigeria.....Most of them would like to stay here and work here."
Quelle surprise!
"Im a bit confused what to tell them.Should i advise them to go home,or should i tell them to stay?"
Where's the confusion? Their visas are provided to enable them to study here. if the issue arises you should tell them they should leave when their studies have ended and return to Nigeria. Once there they can use their newly acquired knowledge to help improve that country for themselves and all their fellow citizens, instead of staying here to flip burgers in McDonalds or deliver breakfast on a scooter to people too lazy to organise it for themselves.
One of the biggest problems which is contributing to unsustainable numbers of people arriving here is the issue of (and subsequent extension to) student visas for people attending an over-provided and (with some notable exceptions) a fairly mediocre university system which is not worthy of the name.
New Judge 'I'll address the issue of immigration being require to fund pensions tomorrow as it's getting late. Needless to say I don't agree.'
On your todo list.. looking forward to you addressing the issue.
It's a 'non-problem' if we simply see the global population as the total number of humans, the current total and predicted.
I am new to this, start from first princples I say.. the projected trends for the UK are downward, so what is the problem?

I read a very interesting book a few years ago by Danny Dorling, related to it I found this conclusion on his blog..
'Of course, the UK experienced huge cuts to vital public services after 2010, especially to those services necessary for sustaining life amongst people who were most frail and most in need, especially the elderly with Alzheimer’s and dementia. The cuts to local authority budgets and the consequent repeated decimation, year on year of adult social service visits, meals on wheels services coupled with the stalling in the needed rise in health care funding and so much else very neatly matches up to the rising death rates among, at first the most elderly women living on their own and then not quite so elderly women and the most elderly men, and then more and more of the population – almost all originally UK born. It was not the in-migrants who were dying in rising numbers. The migrants were young and healthy and disproportionately worked as health carers.'

“It's a 'non-problem' if we simply see the global population as the total number of humans, the current total and predicted.”
Is it? Over-population is the greatest threat to humanity at the present. It will cause far more problems than climate change ever will. However, I’m not particularly concerned with population problems elsewhere as far as this debate goes.
“I am new to this, start from first princples I say.. the projected trends for the UK are downward, so what is the problem?”
Once again, are you sure?. The figures you have provided show the UK population to grow by 4m in the next 25 years. Even assuming that is reliable (and I actually think it’s not, since the UK population from those same figures - grew by almost 10m in the last 25 years and that growth shows no sign of abating) that is still far too great an increase.
As for the remainder of your post, I’m not quite sure why you are providing commentary on death rates among various sections of the population. It’s quite obvious that the death rates among the elderly are going to be higher than those among younger age groups. The logical conclusion to that commentary is that we should continue to import large numbers of younger people from abroad so that the proportion of those dying is at as low a percentage as possible.
The fact is that his country cannot properly cope with the number of people it has now. The NHS is in permanent crisis (and was long before Covid) despite record amounts of money being spent on it; schools in most towns and cities are over-subscribed; the housing market is in disarray and securing a home for many people is a great difficulty. On a minor (but equally important) point, the last time a major reservoir was built in England was in 1991 (Carsington, Derbyshire). In the intervening 32 years the UK population has increased – again from your figures – by more than ten million (most of that increase in England).
So whilst you may see no problem with uncontrolled population growth (principally driven by immigration) there very clearly is. The argument that more younger people must be imported to fund and provide care for older people is ridiculous. The reason for that is because, incredible as it may seem, those people will eventually get old and will require the same care as older people do at present – except that there will be far more of them. So what will be the answer to that? Even greater immigration?
Even a simple examination of the issue will discover that allowing uncontrolled population growth is simply unsustainable on so many levels. The greatest proportion of the current increase comes by way of immigration and the a large percentage of that is fuelled by students. Many of them end up obtaining fairly useless degrees (if they graduate at all) and many of them seek to bring “dependants” to this country and to remain here once their studies have finished. More than 40% of overseas students remain here after they have finished studying.
If the UK is to thrive and grow it needs to develop an economic model which does not depend on huge numbers of people arriving here annually. Unless it does, it will continue to endure all the problems that such an influx creates.
@08.44.My company(since Brexit)has struggled to employ any people prepared to do a fair days work for a fairs day wage. The unemployed, unemployable Aberdonians seem to shun working for a lowly fish processing company. The Poles loved it,the Nigerians are loving it.Perhaps give them a chance till they find suitable employment back in Nigeria?
Perhaps give them a chance till they find suitable employment back in Nigeria?
Perhaps not.
Do you seriously believe that any Nigerians who have finished their studies here and gain a work visa (or even if they don't), are going to be looking for gainful employment in Nigeria? Think on. You've said it yourself:
"Most of them seem to prefer the UK to Nigeria.....Most of them would like to stay here and work here."
Of course they would. The only part of your sentence I disagree with is the use of the word "most" when "all" would be far more appropriate. Nigeria is a dump. I had the grave misfortune of spending a week there many years ago. I stayed in the south, which is the "nice" part of the country. I shudder to think what the not-so-nice parts are like. Poverty is widespread (and I mean proper poverty, not the version that is toted here), AIDS is rampant, life expectancy is low, inflation runs at about 25%, the growth that they enjoyed in the first part of this century has flatlined. In short, an apt desciption would be that allegedly used by the Home Secretary to descibe Stockton-on-Tees.
It is little wonder that they come here allegedly to study. And even less of a wonder that they want to remain - I don't blame them. But we cannot keep importing three quarters of a million people every year, even if some of them might end up working in your fish factory.
Yes,NJ,but without these Nigerians my company would be as well closing down.It nearly went under after Brexit.(Thanks Brexiteers).Only our boss spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on a Spanish EU office saved us(me included)from being on the dole.No Eastern Europeans anymore(well apart from those who came here solely for the dole money),so these Nigerians seem to be filling the gap that the Poles left.
>>"The workshy Aberdonians(who are in a minority,i must admit)arent prepared to work for a living, these Nigerians are prepared to do a fair days work for a fairs day wage."
Have you thought that your company might have a flawed business model. It needs to pay more or do something else to attract UK workers. Don't blame Brexit or the locals.
newmodarmy, prepared to do a jobs, erm, what of the other 100k who are not, and just want a meal ticket, and then granted asylum to bring in there hoard, you are deluded and i mean that. i have seen in the last 30odd yrs of watching, and hiring people, via secretary, wherei had to step in, slightly off topic, i know wasters..and ill tell ya, 1 cannot speak no englay, give me, yea you want an argument..erm, benefits translator, we want.
I believe that's in the pipeline, dave. I heard something in the last couple of days about an 18 month lead time for cancellation if long-term unemployed can't be peeled off the greasy velour.
Of course the professional enablers will rise to the occasion as per citing children, Draconian measures, pet cats etc.
