Graduation is to celebrate the achievements of the students, rather than the country. Besides, the British National Anthem is hardly relevant to the many international students who graduate, and I am also not sure that they'd necessarily welcome their own National Anthems being featured.
It's just weird to regard this as an attack on our "culture and traditions". It's neither. The National Anthem makes sense at sporting events -- I didn't get tired of hearing it at the 2012 Olympics! -- or at events where you're celebrating the national or community story. It doesn't at graduations. Stop getting angry over nothing.
I remember when it used to be played at the cinema, at the end of each film; wise viewers stampeded for the exits while the closing credits were rolling. High time Imax brought it back and respected the nation's tradition and culture once more; Netflix should be required to play the anthem at least once a day as well.
"Secretary of State for Education Gillian Keegan also criticised the university and said: 'This is ridiculous. Universities should stand up for our British values and stop giving in to woke ideology.'"
I wonder if she'll be insisting all English universities play the anthem at graduation ceremonies in future?
