"We're in danger of making politics something only hedge fund donors, young spin doctors and failed trade unionists can afford to do."

I thought that was already the case!

George Freeman was also not born into a 'privileged' family - he grew up on a farm in Newmarket, and his father was a jockey, who won the Grand National in 1958 as well as the King George and other high profile races.

Deskdiary, but he does look far better off if his tax and insurance somehow slips your mind ....

i don't blame him. how have we allowed housing to become so expensive that a person on a very high salary cannot afford a mortgage? the situation is even worse for those who rent, from whom private landlords bleed so much money that they cannot afford to save.

our property market has become highly dysfunctional. it benefits a small section of the population at the expense of millions. not usually one to be sympathetic to tories but he has indicated a real problem.

I agree untitled. Housing costs in the UK are absurd, and its the youngsters I feel sorry for as, without the bank of mum and dad, they're really going to struggle to get on the housing ladder.

The child of a friend of mine has scraped a deposit together, but has been refused a mortgage on affordability grounds...their rent, which she has been paying for years, is greater than the monthly mortgage amount would be.

Whilst I think housing costs are absurd, my wife and I have benefited as due to work done to the house, the area in which we live, and housing appreciation, our house is worth a bloody fortune, so our intention in a few years time is to downsize and give a load of money to our two kids.

They can claim loads on expenses.

Ah yes, that old chestnut.  Rent takes into account repairs, insurance and maintenance,  your mortgage doesnt. It is not a like for like comparison and can vary massively depending on the property you own.  Plus mortagage rates and go up, whilst rent may follow it often doesnt quite so quickly.

I do agree with house prices being rediculous.  It really doesnt do most people any good even if you own a home, in fact it just means more stamp duty that makes it difficult to move.

The problem is we have too many coming in without a trategic infrastrure plan in place. It wont get better until numbers drop.
