approximately one million refugees are sheltering in Rafah as the IDF is preparing a ground assault...

rafah was previously designated a safe zone for civilians by the IDF and there is nowhere else in gaza to flee

what will happen to them?

hamas wouldn't exist without the occupation ynna. they were propped up by israel for years as a means of dividing the palestinian leadership.

But that isn't going to happen, untitled.  You're not being realistic.  Israel must prevail ... or be obliterated.  Those are the options.

So untitled what about the missiles the palestinians have lobbed into Israel on an often daily basis for years.  The only reason they haven't killed many is because of the anti missile batteries Israel have.  There are faults on both sides not just the one that you seem to think it is.

Question Author

"But that isn't going to happen, untitled. "

they gave back the sinai peninsula in the 1980s and as a result have enjoyed peaceful  relations with egypt ever since, a country which was until then dedicated to israel's destruction and now is not. people said that was impossible too, but it happened.

Egyptians aren't Palestinians.

Question Author

thank you for that astonishing insight naomi

You're welcome.

Untitled, Egypt "a country which was until then dedicated to israel's destruction" did try to take the Sinai by force but failed so negotiations took place and both parties ended up at an agreement with Israel giving it back with agreed conditions. Eygpt couldn't take it by force.

Countries and people tend to dig in their heels and not give an inch.

See above, various.

Untitled, your mere mention of the war with Egypt demonstrates your failure to comprehend Israel's position.   Israel has no desire to capture or occupy other lands.  Unlike the Muslims and the Christians, The Jews don't seek converts or to expand their religion.  This conflict stems back to Biblical times.  Israel (the biblical Canaan) is the so called Promised Land - the land allegedly promised to Abraham and his descendants by God.  It is Judaism's spiritual home.  So many people have no understanding of the importance of that land to the Jews, including the Labour MP who bizarrely suggested that Israel be returned to the Palestinians and the Jews resettled on a chunk of land in the US.  For Judaism, no other land will do.  It's that simple.

israel has plenty of land without gaza and the west bank. it does not have the right to colonize those areas and liquidate the people who live in them because it feels religiously entitled to them. that is evil.

israel did also build jewish settlements in the sinai peninsula by the way... and for many years it seemed non-negotiable that the territory would form part of Greater Israel... until of course it wasn't and israel and egypt are both better off for it. it's clearly possible... it is only a question of desire.

Israel isn't that big a country and don't forget that around one and a half million of the Israeli population are Palestinian.  I am not saying that they should throw out the Palestinians from west bank though.

Question Author

nothing justifies their occupation.

Hamas are the evil guys here, but Israel haven't exactly covered themselves in glory either. 1.5 million Gazans and were sent to the designated safe zone of Rafah. Now Israel, having displaced them once, are doing the same again to them, only this time, where are they meant to go?

The longer this war goes on, the doggies the Israeli intentions become. Do the want to eliminate Hamas, or do they want to eliminate all Palestinians from Gaza? They say the former, but their actions hint at the latter.

*foggier, not "doggies"!

Question Author

Quite right mozz.

They can't get at Hamas without disturbing the general population - they are embedded.

Once again. Hamas use human shields and don't give a fig.

They're not "disturbing" the local population Dave, they're destroying them. 22,000 non-Hamas civilians have died since Oct 7. In modern warfare, where they can target a zit on a gnats bum from space, is that really acceptable?

//Once again. Hamas use human shields and don't give a fig.//

Agreed RC, but Netanyahu doesn't exactly appear to be overly bothered either.
