Navalny wan't everyone's cup of tea (so to speak) but what he was was fearless, persistent, irreverent and ruthless in his desire not only to expose corruption but to mock those in power. All those things would have marked him a dead man walking: having survived one attempted assassination, it was always likely that he would be murdered eventually.

This is a strange time for this to happen in my opinion. There is a risk however small that the "elections" might be disrupted or at least punctuated by protests. It has just been confirmed by a Russian observer that there has been hardly any coverage at all about this on Russian media, just a brief statement on the Putin-controlled Channel 1, on which he says if they ever mention him at all, he is referred to as 'that gentleman'.
We now await an "autopsy report" - ha-ha!
