I'm Trying To Think Of A Name
This probably isn't the right section but I don't know where the best place is.
I'm trying to remember the name of a political activist /writer probably born in S Africa but spent a lot of time in UK. Probably dead now - mainly active in 70s 80s 90s - left wing , anti apartheid may have run for political office in this country. Might have spent time in prison due to his campaigning but I'm not sure.
Any thoughts ? Mods please move this if in wrong place. Thank you.

A little bit more than that, He was MP for Neath from 1991 to 2015 and during that time held a number of ministerial and shadow ministerial posts.

Never spent time in prison but in 1976 he was famously tried a the Old Bailey for a bank robbery. He was acquitted:
