In the past the moon has been nearer to earth, and in the future it'll be further away. Between the two points in time is 'now' where the sun and moon appear to us as basically similar sizes. At some point in time this had to be the case, and we are simply fortunate enough to be here to witness it.
(Of course, if reincarnation is real, then it's probably inevitable that we are here to see it.)
