on the rare occasions I go to any sort of supermarket I prefer the SS tills much more convenient.

I hate SS tills. I always get in a bit of a flap and have to be rescued by a staff member. I'd rather queue for a real person to start with.

what so difficult? They are easy to use.

I prefer manned checkouts. It's nice to have a chat with the member of staff. Sad but true.

 

SS tills are easy for the riff raff to walk out after only paying for half their  staff. My local Tesco staff now wear body cams like the do on the Rookie

I scan on my phone then waltz past the queue to the almost unused Smart Shop checkouts. Easy.

Little victories.

I prefer a bit of interaction with humans. Keeps a few people in jobs too.

Yes I used to find it quite challenging with a big shop on my own, loading the belt and packing the shopping the way I wanted it.

Self scan is so much better.

There are no massive queues at my local supermarket. Shopping habits have changed. People have home deliveries and most shoppers are shopping for bits and pieces.

 

TTT...usually if the shop is that busy, all the tills are busy. But fortunately my local sainsburys is not often jammed.

Either that, or I put my helpless old lady face on, and someone takes me to self-service and does it for me 😃 😀

23:03 ditto, I like to pack my bag in my own way in my own time with out the till operator lobbing stuff at me then huffing and puffing when I can't pack it in 3 seconds,  repeating the cost etc while I take time to pack it how I want. I also prefer machines, I was quite euphoric when they first appeared.

I don't get paid to scan my own shopping - that's what the till operators get paid to do.

If they pay me to scan my shopping (offer me a discount??), I may consider using it .... otherwise I'll use the checkout and keep someone in a job.

Just for the record, at Aldi there are meant to be 2 staff monitoring the self-service checkout at all times.  That's the policy, but it's never adhered to.  How do I know this??  My missus works there and at the staff training they were told that there should be 2 staff on the self-service checkouts.  It never happens as there are never enough staff available.

Horses for courses. I prefer a human to assist with the shopping.

I also use cash always. The human touch please.

I have to call on staff about one time in three, and no, it's almost never my fault. Yesterday the till I was using in M&S froze as I was about to pay. With the help of a staff member I had to lug everything down the queue to another checkout and start again.

I admire the simple faith other people have in technology. Mine is roughly the same as a subpostmistress's.

I've never had any problems jno, I guess the machines just seem to know who to function correctly for.

In my experience it's usually the person using them not listening to the instructions.

Your superiority us showing,TTT.

the only instruction I've ever heard from a machine is "Please scan the next item or press Finish and Pay". Which isn't helpful when it then decides I mustn't pay.
