Religion has no role in government, government is a secular matter. Cave in to religious groups and you will find the demands to the puppet government simply grows.
(The same applies to demands from the wealthy/commercially powerful too, and to powerful foreign nations wanting their way, and to unelected foreign elite federal groups. It's the nation's citizens who government should take heed of; and before they are overrun by illegals bringing in foreign ideas to drag the nation backwards.)
