Recycling - One Bin?

I had no idea there were parts of the country not having one bin. Mine has been one bin since the start.

One bin for plastic/metal/glass & a bag for paper. Does it depend on your waste collection company? We have Veolia.

I have a green wheelie bin for garden waste, a large strong blue sack for paper and card and a similar green bag for tins and plastic.  A black crate for glass bottles and jars.

A black wheelie bin for non-recyclables.

We have only one recycling bin - for plastic, paper, cardboard and tin.  We don't have a food bin and we take glass to the bottle bank.

sandyRoe, do you live in Belfast? I have friends who live on the North coast and they have three. Black,rubbish, Brown, garden/ waste food and Blue for all recycled items. It's seems odd that the different councils can't agree on a standard system.

I have 4.  Brown for garden waste (we have to pay for a permit or it won't get emptied by the LA), Green for general waste, Grey for paper/card and Blue for plastic/cans plus a small kerbside bin for food recycling.  We used to have a Blue box for glass bottles but that was taken away a few years ago so we now have to take bottles to the local bottle bank.

I do live in Belfast and the bins here are as you described.  The difference is that we also have a small container for glass.

I have one big bin for paper/metal & plastic

I box for glass

1 big bin for non-recyclable household rubbish

I food bin

We pay separately for a garden waste collection every 2 weeks

I don't really understand the mixing of paper with plastic/metal/glass. It could be a real mess.

11:52  I'd agree with you there Prudie that there should be continuity.  I have relatives on the west coast of Scotland (I'm on the East coast) and they have 4 bins which are Green, Blue, Grey and Purple but what you put in them differs from what I put in mines.  Wouldn't be the first time I have had to tip one up because I put the wrong thing in!

Presumably the bin configuration is dictated by the processing facility. My council boasts impressive recycling figures so they must have the facility to separate the materials. We have all the recycling stuff in one bin, paper, plastic, metal, glass, cardboard.

A neighbour moved out and filled their recycling bin with general rubbish. The recycling collectors wouldn't take it because of the contents and the general rubbish men wouldn't take it because it was the wrong colour! Took weeks to persuade someone to remove it.

davebro3, it may well be a mess but it seems to  be a very lucrative mess. My friends recently told me that their local recycling depot have just bought 21 (twentyone) new lorries to collect even more recyclables.

We used to have separate boxes/bags, but have had a single communal bin for all recyclables for a few years now. 

I get annoyed when people don't break down large cardboard boxes, but stuff them in whole - not even flattened.  The same with plastic bottles - squash them down!  🤬

There's always one bin which gets blown over in the wind and the contents end up all over the place.  No wonder there is so much rubbish lying about the streets.  We have local groups doing regular litter picks and the number of bags they fill is unbelieveable.  Oh, and it's all put into pink bags and left at the pick-up point for the LA to collect.  No sorting/separation of rubbish is done by the litter pickers btw.

We have three.  One for general waste, one for recycling and one for garden waste.  As said earlier the garden waste is only removed if you pay a fee.  We used to have  an insert that went into the recycling bin so that glass could be collected separately.  Now everything goes in the bin together.

I live in a block of maisonettes. We only have communal bins. The recycling bin has a ridiculously small opening. Even if large cardboard boxes are flattened and folded, it's difficult to get them in. Sometimes the recycling isn't collected and there no place to put it. I give up some times.

I believe houses have 2 or 3 bins.
