Sandy, I do remember Dick Barton. We all crowded round the radio for that, but the one for me was Journey Into Space, with Captain Jet Morgan. Not to be missed! And I used to take the "accumulator", as we called it, out of the radio to the local electrical shop on Oldham Rd, to be charged up for a cost of 2d. As I mentioned in a thread some time ago, politicians in this...

1993

'83, not '93

Sunak would have been a boy then.  How did he cope without Sky, I wonder.

Okay, it's quite complicated, Sandy. Sky actually launched in the UK in 1989.

I am seriously deprived.  I have never had Sky tv.  Woe is me

There have been various incarnations of 'Sky TV'.  The name was first used (as 'Sky Channel') in 1984, replacing the earlier branding of 'SATV':

Satellite tv began broadcasting in '83.

Sky Multichannels was launched in '93.

As soon as he said the words, "Sky tv", he must have died inside, his nervous laugh being quite a 'tell'.

That was a really daft thing to say.  Utterly thoughtless.

But when he never wanted for anything how else could he have answered?

He said the family went without a lot of things but as a kid one of the things he wanted was Sky but he couldn't have it.  He didn't say what else they went without.

today deprivation is a 10 year old not having their own smartphone!

Richy's racking up a few errors of judgment. Anyone got a rationale for calling the election, seemingly without many members of the Cabinet being aware beforehand.

Electricity would have been a luxury for us when I was a boy. My mother used to send me to Mrs Varys' corner shop to get a new gas mantle when the old one burned out. No running hot water. No inside toilet or bathroom. The only entertainment we had was a battery powered radio. Eee, times were 'ard then! 😊

Excuse me if I am wrong, but I seem to remember MTV started in 1984 in the UK.

And MTV was only available on the Sky network as far as I remember.

The song Money For Nothing by Dire Straits and the video to the song was all about MTV and that was a hit here in the UK in 85.

Not sure if any of that info has helped.

10clarions,

Do you remember Duck Barton Special Agent on the radio?

We had gas mantles and needed to take the battery from the radio to be charged.

Not 'Duck', 'Dick'.

Satellite Television launched in the UK in 1982from Esa Orbital satellite. It was later called Sky 1

ah, we didn't have TV at all, just had to make our own entertainment singing round the old joanna. Well, we would have but we couldn't afford a joanna, so we just made do with a comb and tissue paper. Except we didn't have a comb because we couldn't afford hair. Happy days!

As I mentioned in a thread some time ago, politicians in this country haven't got the faintest idea what life is like for ordinary people like us, the plebs, the great unwashed. They're clueless. Rishi Soonaxed has never lived.
