This isn't the first assassination attempt on an American president (or President-to-be). The right to bear arms is simply too ingrained in the American psyche to be revoked. It'll never happen.

What the shooter has done is 100% guaranteed a second Trump presidency. Political violence only strengthens your opponent.

The shooter missed his target got himself killed and killed/injured bystanders. In so doing he boosted Trumps election campaign. Unintended comsequences. A murderous fool.

Also - if he'd have killed Trump, absolutely nothing would change. In America you have Trump fans who believe his message - those people won't simply disappear. In fact, they will see this attempt on his life as proof of absoutely everything Trump has claimed - that the Deep State are trying to silence him and by extension, them...that they tried through legal means and now they're trying to actually kill him.

Even if it's proven that the gunman was a "lone wolf", it won't matter.

What if he had been succeeded by (say) Heydrich who was equally fanatical & the generals had been able to prosecute the war more effectively without Hitler's strategic blunders?

Soon they will be forensically combing the shooters' social media to determine who he was and what causes he supported.  That might prove interesting.   
Ex-President came off with a nick to his ear that is not life threatening. He was very lucky. Over 40,000 fellow Amercans weren't so lucky last year.
