The Bard of Stratford upon Avon wrote during the reign of Elizabeth 1, she in turn was queen during a time when there was slavery, therefore ................ he has to go !

Why would a British Prime Minister want to hide away a portrait of perhaps the greatest writer of the English language ?

And atheist, it matters not one jot if it is a good likeness, it is a 'Portrait of William Shakespeare' and no one can contest that, and that is what it symbolises.

It begs the question, has Starmer ever seen one of Shakespeare's plays or read any of the poem's ?

Just another of the terrible blunders, series of errors, misjudgements & scandals which has taken place by him & his appalling administration during these first 100 days in office.

i like shakespeare very much. i don't have any portraits of him hanging up.

i would expect a professional artist (lol) to understand the difference between admiring a person and wanting a portrait of them on the wall

KHANDTO, "It begs the question, has Starmer ever seen one of Shakespeare's plays or read any of the poem's ?"

How would the answer to that affect his suitability to be our Prime Minister?

Aye, there's the rub...

More like Much Ado About Nothing...

Unititled, what's with the 'lol' to Khandro?

Some might say it's been a Comedy of Errors and Labour's Lost Love from former supporters...

Best thing Starmer did was remove the painting of T.H.L

Just about sums up these philistines and twerking class imposters. The bloke who talks like a regected sat nav voice bins, probably, the greatest exponent of the spoken English language. They shame us all.

Turn left. Turn left. Are we there yet? Mind the black pothole. Turn the heater off and save fuel. First exit on the right to save your life.

People are dying in vast numbers in conflicts, through starvation, through weather events, and more but let's get apoplectic about a few paintings being shifted or removed.

I'm told he's replaced it with a picture of a lettuce 😀

^^^^    ^^^^

That's cos he's a cabbage.

Apart from hating 'lefty' '5C-ers' what particularly attracted you to the Bard? Haven't seen much of you in the Arts and Literature section.

Well, it's total idiocy to remove the portraits- it demonstrates the paucity and ideological set of his thoughts.

Personally very proud of our history, including on slavery.  We followed the crowd ofother nations and then thought 'hold on' when protests from cottonworkers etc. in England began to be heard - Wm. Wilberforce etc..

WE were the first country to stop it!  I'm proud of that.

WE lost men fighting slave ships from other countries.

I heard an interview a few months ago with a very old Windrush arrival (living in Leeds).  His parents had been born from slaves, and his grandparents had been slaves...... He had no problem with it.  They had been good owners/employers and his antecedents had happily transferred their status tothat of employee - with no hard feelings.

No, I have nothing to be ashamed of.  Individuals did bad things...... we stopped them.

Kids are being given the wrong message.  Arab nations have been great slavers since the year dot.

We don't actually know why the paintings were removed or shifted. Maybe Shakespeare was moved because he was anti-Semitic?

jourdain. Everyone's been slavers since the year dot. You're being a bit romantic about England.

Right-wing press stirring things up?

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

The occupants of Number 10 can't be expected to put up with the artistic tastes of their predecessors.

Atheist, I agree - every country did slavery ---- but we did put a stop to it in our country and others........ and we did lose men and ships fighting slavers. So I remain proud of that.
