I do agree but if they are going to charge more we need larger spaces. The size of parking spaces does not seemed to have changed very much over the years. I remember my dad had a triumph 2000, that was considered a big car, it's not as wide as a Nissan Micra today! The spaces though are still the same size.

too many people with too many cars - that's the problem

No.  Spaces have to be big enough to accommodate all cars regardless of size.

11:03 ....and....? why is that? ....I think we all know!

Question Author

11:06 so all spaces need to be bigger?

No.  The spaces we have now work.... in the main.

Question Author

11:09 no they don't My car is not especially big but I have to park carefully or when I come back I can't get in. A Humvee as featured in the link won't get between the lines. I'd happily pay more for bigger spaces.

So you have to park carefully.  So you should.

You can park as carefully as you like but if the person parking next to you doesn't care you're lumbered.

11:13 I mean carefully such that some numpty can't park close to my door so I can open it. So I drive around and look for an end space or something.

My L200 never fitted in the lines, and my Transit was a real problem.  The spaces are far too small.

My mate in Canda has a F150, it easily fits in the spaces.

@11:03, agreed, net result of too many people.

....and also another indicator that motoring is far too cheap.

Cars have got bigger for safety reasons, crumple zones and all that.

Dad had a mercedes, it was easy to open the doors and get out in his garage, I parked our Tiguan in there and had to let Mrs N get out before entering, then get close to one side so I could open my door. Local shopping centre squeeze 3 between pillars the one in the middle can struggle to get out the car.

One of my daughters has solved the problem, her car is covered in big dents - no one parks near 🤣

The problem I see with offering different size spaces is take-up.  How many times have you gone into a car park and struggled to find a space when there have been rows of disabled or parent and child spaces standing empty - and unusable to you?

Just make the sizes bigger.

But we all know why, they can issue tckets to those that cant get inside the lines.

Were it just for massive cars taking more than one reasonable space then there is some argument in favour. But it is the thin end of an unfair wedge and will be applied everywhere if allowed.

We already see this sort of abuse when car drivers are charged in certain areas for having the older car they can afford. What next; wheelchair users being charged storage on the bus for their chair ?

It's to be avoided because, as we all know, the real driver for suggestions such as these is to grab more money from public citizens using any excuse someone can dream up. No one should look to agreeing to add yet another stick for their own back.

OG: "We already see this sort of abuse when car drivers are charged in certain areas for having the older car they can afford." - never heard of that? I have a 20 year old car never been charged by age in any sphere.

Bigger spaces across the board is an option but that would result in fewer spaces overall.  For the reason given I don't think a two-size option and a two-level payment is a good idea.

TTT - Lewisham council charges more for higher polluting vehicles = older vehicles. I'm sure there are others.

Try taking your old car into an area just outside of Sadiq's jurisdiction, T³.  Or better still, inside his area.

Plus have a look at how the road fund licence is corrupted these days.
