Giving public money to supporters of terrorists because of some technically is unacceptable to anyone able to think rationally. As the law stands he isn't entitled to compensation, so government ought not be considering changing the law to make him so. (But the government is deliberately messing up as much as it can while it had the opportunity. We also read that the Chagos issue is getting signed today. We may need to do a "Putin" if we want to reverse the misdeeds of this apparent anti-UK government.)
Not a valid comparison. He was understandably suspected of crime and put into custody. How many objecting here are in the same position ? According the the paper his case is that the wrong minister signed off his custody order. Big blessed deal ! No one is suggesting that the Secretary of State wouldn't have done so anyway.
> But Sir Keir’s plans will reverse two sections of the 2023 Northern Ireland Troubles Act which denied Mr Adams and up to 400 other IRA “suspects” also detained in the 1970s the right to claim compensation.
That law was only enacted in 2023, so what was the situation before 2023 and why didn't Adams claim compensation say in 2005 (under Labour) or 2015 (under the Conservatives)?
Andrew Malkinson - somebody who was definitely wrongly imprisoned, for 17 years - has still not received compensation, three years after he was released.
