“If he's entitled to compensation under the law then he should receive it.”But he’s not entitled to it. The government is considering changing the law. The reason for that is our old friend, the European Convention on Human Rights. Northern Ireland’s High Court ruled that the current legislation, which prevents Mr Adams from receiving compensation, is...

If he's entitled to compensation under the law then he should receive it.

Question Author

If that is the case, then as Mr Bumble said: "The law is an ass."

Labour have been rewarding IRA terrorist for years.  If it isn't Blair letting them out of jail, or Corbyn inviting the IRA for tea in the Commons, so Starmer paying out is no surprise.

Labour love terrorists that's always been the case.

I thought (hoped) he was dead. Is he a murderer?

They burger about for decades to not pay the PO scandal victims, yet they'll repeal laws in order to pay out terrorist scum. No doubt the PM will personally take the cheque round and get down on one knee. What a shower.

He would have to put a claim in for it - I cannot see that even he would have the front to do it.

As Sandy says if the law states that he has an entitlement then he should get it.

But yes in this scenario the law is an a s s

Please! Freedom fighter trying to release his people from the yoke of British oppression through the car bomb and drug dealing, surely.

Point him in any direction and set him on his way from 'compensation'.

This is a disgrace.

Our disgrace of a Prime Minister seriously needs his bumps felt.  Is he ill?

Starmer is proving to be worse than Corbyn & I wouldn't have that it was possible even for Labour to find such a leader.

Giving public money to supporters of terrorists because of some technically is unacceptable to anyone able to think rationally. As the law stands he isn't entitled to compensation, so government ought not be considering changing the law to make him so. (But the government is deliberately messing up as much as it can while it had the opportunity. We also read that the Chagos issue is getting signed today. We may need to do a "Putin" if we want to reverse the misdeeds of this apparent anti-UK government.)

I take it that all those against him receiving any compensation would be quite happy to be incarcerated illegally by the UK government, and be happy to receive no compensation for their loss of freedom.

Not a valid comparison. He was understandably suspected of crime and put into custody. How many objecting here are in the same position ? According the the paper his case is that the wrong minister signed off his custody order. Big blessed deal ! No one is suggesting that the Secretary of State wouldn't have done so anyway.

> But Sir Keir’s plans will reverse two sections of the 2023 Northern Ireland Troubles Act which denied Mr Adams and up to 400 other IRA “suspects” also detained in the 1970s the right to claim compensation.

That law was only enacted in 2023, so what was the situation before 2023 and why didn't Adams claim compensation say in 2005 (under Labour) or 2015 (under the Conservatives)?

'Suzanne Dodd, whose police officer father Stephen was killed in the IRA Harrods store bombing in 1983, said: “Considering the IRA victims have not received any compensation, how could Gerry Adams get compensation? My father was killed 41 years ago and it is highly unacceptable to hear that.”'

khandro: "Starmer is proving to be worse than Corbyn & I wouldn't have that it was possible even for Labour to find such a leader." - you know I never thought I'd say this but I think I'd prefer agent Cob and the abacus to this treacherous bunch. At least Cob was up front about his politica.

As far as I see it, this decision is not there soley that Mr Adams gets compensation - he would have to apply for it - along with any other 'victims'.

Not a lot stopping him though. The principle of whether he should be able to is still up for debate.

Andrew Malkinson - somebody who was definitely wrongly imprisoned, for 17 years - has still not received compensation, three years after he was released.

Just saying ...

In memory of the great freedom fighter Bobby Sands,i would give all these IRA freedom fighters a free chicken supper and a can of cola each.
