ta chris, lesson learned

isnt that what factory resets do - take it back to an out of the box condition?

Do you mean a reset is not safe before passing on to somebody else because all your files can be restored?

oh, that makes more sense of course

The files will get wiped for a FR but the drives will not be formatted so an undelete program will be able to get them back I suspect that is what your SIL did. FR does do what it says on the tin but files can be recovered unless a proper forensic format wipe is done. Most won't have any clue about that so it's mostly not an issue but yes if you FR a pc and then sell it there is a very small chance that a future computer savvy user can get files back but that diminishes with time as the storage medium gets re used.

The problem with 'Factory Reset' is that it's not a Windows command.  Many computers won't have it at all, whereas what it does on others will depend upon how it's been set up by the manufacturer.

So, for example, Manufacturer A might configure their computers to have a 'Factory Reset' option which formats their hard drives and then reinstalls Windows, whereas Manufacturer B might set things up so that 'Factory Reset' simply 'refreshes' the existing Windows installation, without removing any user files.

That's good advice and good news- but maybe your keyboard might have some crumbs in it
