yeah

you sing - "foo danga lang"  - and call for pardners to the dayance at intervals os a minute

we all  fall about laughing at your repeated ability to trivialise an important point - er end of !

and shout " good old TTT!"

the problem being though, some "plods" take the view that shoplifting is a civil matter unless the value of the theft is above a certain (high) amount. indeed some forces do no more in response than helpfully advise retailers how to progress claims through the civil court.

Means higher prices of course but may be time for more shops to hire their own security staff.

My daughter was in a local Waitrose garage shop a few weeks ago, when a young man was blatantly helping himself to items on the shelves, then just casually walked out! The two cashiers said they're not allowed to confront them. They just make a note of it and inform police later.

The police and army appear to be dealing with a potentially explosive situation.

I can't see grounds for criticism here.

I was reading an item of a poll, yesterday, in which it claimed the majority of the population wanted capital punishment to be used for vertain crimes.

It sort of made sense until i read that 20% of those polled suggested the death sentence for shoplifting!

Those on AB who hate all things Islamic might like to consider this aspect of Sharia law.

The thief has a hand chopped off.

True Sandy, your mates do have some good points.

Our local supermarkets do have security staff, but they are limited in what they can do.

They can only physically detain someone wihtin the limits of the law ('reasonable force') and detain them whilst the Police are called.

They are not allowed to earch anyone or theor belongings to prove theft.

Police to not attend.

Security staff have been assaulted, but more often jeered at or ignored as their presence cannot stop the theft without police support and the thieves know it.

A bit of name calling shouldn't even be a crime, its ridiculous!

I don'tknow about X(wastwitter) but the local police group on Facebook is very useful for the public and for the police. For the former frequent updates are given of road closures after accidents and for the latter there have been a number of cases of misssing persons being found after police appeals. Perhaps it would be wiser to criticise from experience rather than ignorant hearsay.

Well maybe the law needs to change. If the police can't/won't do the job others should be given the authorisation to do it.

Canary, thats all wel and good but you dont need a plod to do that, in nfact it ubdoubtedly is being done by a civilian.

We need to adopt zero tolerance, it has been shown (NY) that doing that has a knock on to aother crime, if only freeing up officers to deal with bigger crime.

But we wont, might get plod to arrest the far right for shouting at a dog I suppose.
