As much as I agree with cutting the benefits bill I do love the hypocrisy of Labour....When Osborne was doing it it was to "fund tax cuts for the rich" - Now Labour are doing it it's ok!

The so-called cuts are piddling. £5bn on  projected spend of £100bn (t today's prices, so not adjusted for inflation) by 2030. It is very unlikely that any significant reduction will be realised.

Many  Labour backbenchers (and one or two nearer he front) have expressed their unease at the move. I don't think they've anything to worry about.

But I agree, had this proposal come from the wicked Tories, there would be accusations that they are condemning tens of thousands of people tto povery and an early death. But they will no doubt still be able to get their Beemers and Mercs from Motability.

I think the Motability scam will be the next ordure to hit the fan, and sometime soon....

Well; circumstances change.

When they got in they found that £1.50p black hole.

Motability being discussed now on Jeremy Vine's Radio2 programme

it is indistinguishable from what george osborne was doing 10+ years ago and it will have similarly lethal consequences.

Of course "benefits" need to be cut, possibly eliminated, for some, eventually. How else can we afford to keep the immigrants well furnished and comfortable. Do they qualify for motability after a periond of acclimatisation?

The irony of cutting benefits to to UK tax payers while using colossal amounts of tax payers' money to cosmetics illegal immigrants, cannot be lost on anyone with a brain.

Shame on Labour for more spiteful  inverse snobbery making miniscule cuts in profligate spending, and using them for political grandstanding.

A fifth of all new cars sold in the UK (half  in Northern Ireland!) are bought under the Motability scam, sorry, scheme.

If you qualify for PIP - which you can make a claim for if you suffer from anxiety, obesity, constipation, eczema, acne and many more - you can then sign over all or some of that PIP to Motability in return for a lease on a new car, including insurance, servicing and road tax, then another new one 3 years later.

Motability is a charity with a £7billion turnover, and the chief executive Andrew Miller last year received nearly £750,000 in pay and bonuses.

The whole thing needs a severe examination, pronto.

'Cosset'!

Get this. You can qualify to recieve a brand new motor through the scam even without ever having had a driving licence or intending to. Just name 3 drivers for the insurance and off they go. In fact rent it out to them or take a cut in the taxi, delivery or courier businesses they set up. Hammer the guts out of it 24/7 and get a brand new one every 3 years. Nice.

Motability is  car lease scheme. If they didn't spend the money to lease the car they would spend it on other things. It doesn't cost the government anything; if it were scrapped tomorrow then the users would just have more cash in hand.

"It doesn't cost the government anything;" - perlease!

//It doesn't cost the government anything//

How can it not cost the government?

So the Government doesnt fund it at all then?  You sure about that?

Labours Magic money tree Naomi, formally Sunaks.

Of course it costs the government (us): what it pays out in PIPs for the panoply of 'health conditions'

I know three people who have had their Motability cars taken off them and been barred from the scheme because they abuse the system.

There are restrictions as to annual mileage.

Of course you don't need to drive to qualify. A blind, disabled person needs a car just as much as a sighted disabled person.

You have to tell Motability to insure it for business purposes, there are strict restrictions.

The scheme is good, the people who abuse it are not.

As I said, brainiac, they can spend the money on a Motability car or anything else.

Many people who have Motability cars work full time and would be housebound without the car.

The scheme is good, those who abuse the system should be dealt with harshly

It is funded directly by the people that lease the cars. Yes that money does come from the government but they could spend it on booze, bookies and bingo if they wanted to.

I think what Barry means is that it would not cost the government any less should the scheme get closed down.

They get (for example) £300 a month regardless if they lease a mobility car.

Apologies if that is not what you mean Barry
