Really? Is this really happening? If it is then I do not agree one bit, why would you call an airport after an alcoholic who wasted his own kidney then took someone elses and began to destroy that too?

Replace kidney with liver - doh
you're missing the point here bob, what the majority of us are saying on here is that a man like him does not warrant such adulation. No one is throwing stones, just stating that he doesn't deserve to have an airport named after him! apart from a bit of good football in the 70's he hasn't done anything to deserve it, quite the opposite. He lived his life how he chose to live it, and fair play to him for that but its celebrating a man who became more famous for his drunken antics than his football. Quite a bad example, i'd say, to future generations. and no,i'm far from perfect, but if i recieved a liver from someone to save my life, i'd make damn sure i looked after it!!!!! They are incredibly precious as other people waiting for them would tell you.
Why change the name of the airport anyway? People will still call it Belfast airport, so there's no point really.
I bet the Duty free shop is going to be very impressive .
He was an incredibly talented footballer and was at the pinnacle of his profession for ten years from 1963 to 1973, but it hardly warrants an airport being re-named.

I would have thought a more appropriate memorial would be to have a pub named after him.

That isn't meant to be sarcastic by the way, but it would remind youngsters for generations who he was and to follow in his sporting achievement footsteps and not the alcohol related ones.
as i say jules the majority of here disagree with you cant all be wrong, the man was a genius who gave pleasure to millions he only hurt himself, yes he was flawed but arnt we all? he had a disease which he lost out to he couldnt help himself live and let live eh your days are not over yet so be not so quick to judge.
Well, I don't suppose that it will last all that long and then it will become the Adams & McGuiness Airport.

That George Best was a flawed individual,is not in question. He battled against a disease which threatens all it's sufferers, all day every day.HOWEVER, George Best was not just a great footballer from the 70s...he represented to the people of Northern Ireland,of whom I am one, a reason to be proud of our country in those times when the rest of the world just looked on in horror. George never forgot his Belfast roots and did so much charity work here that a lot of people never knew about. So many people from here, had such memories of how generous he was with his time and thoughtfulness. The majority of people in N.I. are delighted with the decision about the airport.

good point about people never actually saying it.

I live in liverpool, and i have never once heard anyone ever call it john lennon airport, just liverpool airport but actually it is most commonly called speke airport

Belfast has two airports:

Isn't it the City Airport which is the one in question here?

I'm from Belfast and don't presonally care one way or the other and I do tend to think the name won't change even locally. Getting back to bobtheturkey saying John Lennon was a ******, have to agree. He was a manipulative wife abusing, child abusing wreck of a man whose self centered nastiness caused numerous people untold heartbreak. His songs were ok, but not genius by any stretch of the imagination so the fact that George wasn't always the niceest chap just puts him on a par with Lennon, so since the concensus is to rename the airport I won't disagree.
wow, was he really a child abuser?????? back that up please, cause thats a pretty strong accusation and i am interested in what you mean.
Forget it, yes great footballer, nice bloke I met him several times but he threw his life away, no way should they change the name!!!

hi jules, whilst I didn't know the bloke personally it's reasonably well documented in a book and also a documentary called "The real john lennon", by Brian Moses.

It documented fairly clearly via interviews with his first wife cynthia, his son julian and friends of theirs that he treated both his wife and child very badly indeed, beating her and mentally and sometimes physically abusing his child.

Put me right off the creep to be honest and struck me as being true as it included interviews with his friends as well as hers, who confirmed what a class one a**e he was.He was a serious drug abuser at the time, it has to be remembered, but never the less, left him in a less than flattering light.

i have read a lot about john over the years but never that he physically and mentally abused Julian. If thats true, then thats a ****** thing to do and never something i would condone. I am wary of all these so called "friends" of the rich and famous who talk about them when they're dead and can't defend themselves, just take Princess Di for a start. To be honest, as far as the drugs thing go, i don't think we'd like any celebrity if we held that against them, its pretty common! Johns music was groundbreaking and changed the face of music. You may think the word genius is incorrect, but to many, he was. He is still very much loved across the world (as is George) even 20 years after his untimely death. I do take your point about George best, i guess it was the liver transplant that did it for me with him. I appreciate your response.

Belfast only has one airport, which is the one having its name changed. The other one (called Belfast International Airport) is actually in Antrim, not Belfast

The liver transplant cured his condition not his illness!

Thank you philby,a point well put there.
so cure the illness before you recieve a very vauable organ!
