What is happening to everyone, there is so much violent crime in the UK and the trend seams to be going in the wrong way, does anyone think its time to reintroduce capital AND corpral punishment?

Yes, it is time. However neither will happen whilst Britain remains a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights.

A step in the right direction would be to impose realistic prison sentences for such crimes and to ensure they are fully served. How we have allowed a situation to develop where prisoners serve, at most, half of their sentences, and very ofter much less, is one of life's great mysteries.

56% of the UK public agree with a return of capital punishment

It's not happening to everyone though, is it? It's a few unrepresentative idiots that then get splashed all over the Daily Mail.

Why some people choose to fixate on such things is beyond me. Stop fetishing criminals. It's all the some of you ever seem to think about. Don't you think you're rather squandering the precious gift of life on this obsession?

Go outside, take a walk. It's a nice day. Bet you don't get mugged.

but the problem is that its no longer splashed all over the news, most such incidents don't even make the news, as it happens SO often. Anyone who lives in a large city would know what I mean. Everybody knows someone who has been mugged and/or assulted.

...most of such incidents *never* made the news. Not ever. Violence has always occured and the vast majority of it has always gone unreported.

Capital and corporal punishment does not work. The USA has a ferocious crime rate and their homicide rates even where the death penalty is in place far eclipses ours. You don't need to be a genius to understand that violence begets violence even if it's judicial.
Get ahead with capital punishment

Corporal punishment takes some beating
Every time there is anything on the news about violent crime we get this same question and then an almost identical thread appears. Waldo and Nox are completely right.
I don't see any need for corporal or capital punishment, merely more realistic sentencing for people involved in violent crime or found in possession of knives and firearms in a public place.

Knife Crimes are in the news at the moment purely because of the amnesty. It's an area that the media can highlight one week and dispose of the next. Not that I think this necesarily a bad idea. I think that we're right to highlight what is a dangerous sub-culture, and a law that is confusing as to punishment for carrying a knife. I cannot for the life of me think of a reason why someone could resonably be carrying a knife on the street (barring utility tools such as the Swiss Army). Would a fixed prison term help?

We need to educate people if they see a violent incident you call the police, you do *not* wade in like some testosterone fuelled John Wayne.

The Police have stab vests, pepper spray, batons and back up - you do not.

It only takes a small stab wound to an artery and you'll be dead before an ambulance gets out of A&E.

Talk, shout, run - only fight as a very last resort

Philosphically, I have mixed feelings about capital punishment. However, it seems to me that the argument that it doesn't deter crime omits a fundamental part of the equation. We can never know how many people didn't commit a crime punishable by death because of the possible results. Who is ever going to take such a poll? Even given higher crime rates (many segments of the rates are actually dropping here in the western U.S.) I'm not convinced the lack of such data doesn't skew the results...
my solution is this

1) reintroduce national service
2) automatic sentances (5years for possesion without mitigating cirumstances and automatic 20 years for threatining with a knife)
3) self defence classes for all without a criminal record

How much for an animal activist going to stab a vivisectionist?

Now I've heard everything!

ROTFLMAO

(I think my sides just split)

(that's in relation to self defense classes for all of course)

You might find this interesting from the BBC news website

FATAL STABBINGS (ENGLAND AND WALES)

1994 - 231
1995 - 243
1996 - 197
1997 - 200
1997/8 - 202
1998/9 - 20
1999/00 - 212
2000/01 - 214
2001/02- 261
2002/03 - 266
2003/04 - 234
2004/05 - 236

(I think 98/9 is atypo)

Doesn't look as if fatal stabbings have actually risen at all in the last 10 years at least.

Whoa, hold on a minute.......is the light of truth that posted above the same light of truth that said he/she/it would happily shoot an animal researcher????
I believe so. Hence me wondering what the sentence would be for someone stabbing a vivisectionist?

....which he/she/it has yet to answer I see....
